Probably not, the vast majority of juries are not sequestered.

Again, to get out of jury duty just say you have a difficult time, but not an impossible time, believing cops. This will cause the Prosecutor to waste a peremptory to get rid of you.

Maybe I'll say, "I always take the cops at the word, because why would they lie?" to make the defense waste one of theirs. :P

The only time I was called for jury duty, I wore a suit and tie, and I was quickly dismissed. Good thing: it was supposed to be a lawsuit against an insurance company over a car accident with lots of video depositions from doctors.

A few years ago I ran into some guy outside of the courthouse who was telling me had jury duty. I asked him what kind of case, and he responded that it was a suit between two massive downtown law firms. I just told him "Get settled in, you aren't going anywhere for a while."

Judge expects trial to start Monday.

Twenty-seven of the 40 potential jurors are white, seven are black, three are mixed race and three are Hispanic. No word if any are white-Hispanic.

7/40 black, that's almost twice what it would be by chance. I guess black people are less likely to have formed opinions about the case...

Yeah, right.

Yeah, right.

Why, it's just a statistical anomaly. smile.gif

Yeah right, you think the PC police aren't active in this case.

How about if 6 of the 7 blacks are picked and the final jury is 100% black?

Do you think there would be any riots or protesters then?

I have confidence the black people will be stricken from the jury pool.

Z has ten strikes, but based on the rulings so far, I doubt the judge is going to let Zimmerman strike seven black people.

The numbers are difficult but the defense might be able to do it. If the Prosecution strikes all 3 Hispanics I'd expect a bigger reaction.

You two are lawyers.

Is it correct that it is prohibited by law ( I think! ) to strike jurors solely because of their race?

Still, if I were Z's lawyer, I would try to do just that by whatever means necessary, overt or covert. It just seems common sense in this specific case. I don't see O'Meara as a Marcia Clark satisfied.gif

Same idea on the prosecution side. I wouldn't admit it, but I would do anything possible to get black jurors seated.

ANd I can't wait for the dumbass posts on FB if this happens. "WHY ARE THERE NO BLACK PEOPLE IN THE JURY? WHERE IS TRAYVON'S JUSTICE?"

Yep. You don't have to give any reason to use a peremptory strike, unless you strike too many people of one race. Then the judge can ask, and if you don't have a good one, stop you from striking them. The thing is, the judge has an immense amount of discretion as to how to apply these rules (just like she does with strikes of cause).

The judge is really the one who's going to be picking the jury, and it sure looks like she's decided it will have black people on it.

Thanks, good explanation. It would be just if the jury reflects the make up of the county. I think the county is 10-12% black ( per a previous post of HBs )

That would indicate statistically there would be 0 or 1 black juror. I think the chances of 0 black jurors is zero! And I think it is 50-50 that there will be either 1 black juror or more on the jury. That should satisfy the PC police. If the jury has more than 2 black jurors, O'Meara should be disbarred.

As I've said from the get go, I think this sad drama is more about present day racial issues than the killing of Trayvon.

PS: I just saw a news flash that said the jury has been selected. All 6 are female and 1 juror is black. This seems surprisingly reasonable. I am surprised that both sides were OK with an all female jury. More so with O'Meara than with the prosecution. But we shall see what happens.
