If it truly did begin as an act, then surely the fact that he's carried it on so successfully and so pervasively for all these years -- including in his private moments, where there's no audience for it -- suggests that he's achieved alphahood by now. It may have begun as a costume, but if the costume fits, then so be it.
There's no rational argument, one way or the other, against Don Draper's alpha status. He is as alpha a man as the show has to offer. That may be the entire point of his character, actually.
