I didn't think of this. The symbolism is well done. Also remember some of the literature at the time focused on suicide and hopelessness in the face of rampant commercialism, economics taking on more value than human life and we can see the corporate machine becoming more rampant (Dow chemical, the corporations being more demanding with fees). It is not completely out of tune with the literature and such of the time to have a character commit suicide. However, it did seem somewhat "quick" for lack of a more eloquent term. I feel like this season has one flaw, the early episodes were too slow in terms of overall plot development and we focused so much on Don's marriage and other domestic affairs that it feels like this storyline of the office politics and such seems compressed and disjointed (we have had nearly 3 episodes in a row of stunning, wild, character turns and upheaval). I could have done with less of Don and Megan dragging each other to the floor and more focus on other aspects of the story.
Just my 2 cents.
Sad though, I liked Lane. I felt he was interesting character who had more opportunity to grow. He had some good set pieces. I wonder if any budget/political considerations were involved in the decision to kill his character off or if this was planned for some time?
