Well I don't have the $800, and that was the problem in the first place. I'm going to get the high end Macbook Pro sometime relatively soon, but the price of that + the price of the data recovery is just disgusting to think about.

Wow, how much are these Macs now? I've been building my own gaming machines for about 6 years and have ALWAYS kept the price under $1k. In October I just built a new box! Intel Core2Duo Processor E6400 Socket T (LGA 775) Intel G965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard 2GB DDR2 800 RAM Geforce 7900GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card This was right around $900 and it SCREAMS. 3DMarks are in the 5000 range. I ended up putting in a 700GB RAID for XMas.

I have a gaming PC that cost me about $800 or $900 as well. It's a completely different machine than what I use to do design. Even if I went PC (which I wouldn't), a laptop with the same specs as the MacBook Pro is right around the same price (2.4ghz dual core, top of the line mobile GPU, 2gb DDR800 ram 16x DL DVD writer, 15"+ monitor). I think the Sony one I looked at was $2,475 or so, and it was pretty ugly, the keyboard was uncomfortable and it was a bit heavy for my taste, and also had an external antennae.

Macs are expensive. The one I want is $2600 retail. With the student discount and the further discount that was valid yesterday only, it will set me (my parents until I pay them back) $2,150.

As far as I know that's pretty much the same pricing Macs have been at for the past couple years. A little bit more than a pre-built PC with the same specs.

What 3DMark are you using? I just put together a machine this weekend (ATi card, x1850 I bevieve, 512 DDR3, amd mobo/processor, 2gb ram) and the 3dmarks were around 15000

I am actually sticking with my Powerbook G4 for a reason. I was reading benchmarks on the new MacBooks and they were quite disappointing. The white, "cheap" version actually out performed or nearly matched the Pro on several benchmarks. The whole thing was rushed to market. If I were to buy one right now I would get a white MacBook because of the speed and price. However, all my stuff, even my PC is stainless steell so I want to wait for a second generation MacBook Pro to make it worthwhile, not to mention my 12" G4 does everything I need it to.

MacBooks do not have dedicated video RAM, which is a huge drawback for me since I do a lot of video and photo editing as well as illustration. Also, the MacBook processor is not Duo Core. Otherwise the black MacBook would be my choice.

The current MacBook Pro *is* an updated version. I believe the older model capped out at 2.16 Ghz, the new one at 2.33.

However, I may be holding off and waiting till fall when the big revisions usually come around. Depends on what my parents say. They have the gavel.

Hi everybody,

My name's Nabil and I'm new here. I found this forum when my hard drive got hosed- the fellow at the mac store couldn't read it at all and said I'd need a SATA drive. Can anyone give me some pointers? It's a MacBook running Leopard.

Thanks much,

Nabil

Anyone tried the freezer trick with success?

Personally no, but others seem to have had luck with it. These links are for a few other options, if you're feeling adventurous.

Well my 500gig Western Digital external died a little while back, I tried the freezer trick last week and it didn't work.....

But I just got my warranty replacement drive. I lost a shitload of old work and GIS data, but I guess I can eventually replace it....
