Dimples on Ties...

Im curious...
When is the Dimple a MUST on a tie?

Does it depend on the fabric? (I dont know that you could apply a dimple on a wool or tweed tie because of its thickness, havent tried it, but would it be a sin?

Does it depend on the Knot?
To me it looks like the dimple looks great on a Full Windsor, but would it be a sin to apply it to a Four In Hand or something?

Does it depend on the occasion?
Should I avoid the dimple if im heading to a bar or a more casual/social setting and reserve it for business or more formal settings?

What are your thoughts?

It boils down to personal preference. I think of dimples as more formal, and go without when wearing a tie casually.

I almost always wear a half windsor knot, which is easy to make a nice single dimple with.

As Maegnus said, it really does boil down to personal preference as well as what the tie wants to do naturally.

I know some people are so pro-dimple that they will try and shout any other opinions down but that doesn't make it true. In fact I'm of the opinion if you put too much effort focused on whether or not your tie is dimpled, you need some new hobbies.

if I were wearing skinny ties, I probably wouldn't dimple them - always.

However you tie your ties, you are crushing the fabric at the knot and it is going to develop some memory after a while. The first time I tie a tie, it's sometimes harder to get it to dimple properly. Later on, it just ties easily with a dimple, since it's got that memory. But I think whatever you decide, don't just leave the tie all bunched up at the knot and crushed like a lot of people do. Whether you dimple or don't dimple, do it deliberately, IMHO.

Or even better, tie it once and leave it that way for 30 years.
