Where to source good tailors..

Afternoon Gents,

This is my first post in here, but been viewing for a while now.

I need some advice from some suit connoisseurs. I've bought suits in Thailand previously but wanted some advice on what countries are best for good tailors without too hefty of a price tag and where language isn't a strong barrier.

I though of visiting China but the contacts I've found either don't speak English very well or only have Chinese cotton. Can anyone help me on this?

First of all, how much is your budget? If you could spend roughly £1000 for a two piece and £1200-1500 for three piece suiting, most would suggest the HK tailors (WW chan, Gordan Yao, A men...etc)

Some Korean tailors is also excellent in their work, such as the B&Tailorshop

I have been to WW Chan for a lot of times for myself and my family, there work is very well for SF standards (only excellent to the SR tailors), they have hell a lot of tourists so their english should be alright

My friend in Korea introduced B&T shop to me, I went there with him to pick up his overcoat and causal jackets, the work to me is even better than HK tailors and very innovative in their design, they seems to be the only one who can actually do shirt shoulder on suit jackets in asia (as far as I know), price is similar to Chan and others, reasonable in english, as long as you slow down talking to them it is fine

Good luck in your search and welcome to SF

Hi Sincere

You may consider to visiting Singapore. laugh.gif For sure, language will not a barrier.

Again, depends on you budget. There are many tailors with different 'quality' in Singapore.

Drop me a line if you would like to find out more.

Thanks.

add911_11 thanks for getting back to me.

That is a lot higher my budget would allow, was thinking more £150-250. For £1000+ I could source someone decent within the UK. Would Korea or HK still be good for the lower price range do you know?

Thanks Maxee, looking for decent quality English or Italian fabrics (previously used Gino Matteo), do you know if I could find those in Singapore?

You can indeed, but it will not be the same quality work as WW Chan.

I actually recommended the usual suspects in HK til I saw the OP's budget.

OP you do realize that at your budget, you are looking at a garment that is glued together with meh fabrics? I'd even doubt that at that price point it is going to be bespoke in most places. You are pretty much going to get the same garment regardless of which tailor you go to.

You could try Peter Lee in HK though. I remember seeing in his price list that he does fused garments(glued together) that should be within your budget.

However, at that price point I'd just recommend you to just save that money and get something decent in the UK which I think will at best be on par with Chan's stuff.

I had garments made by Peter Lee recently, I think a fused suit would be around $4000HKD

I genuinely can't think of a place could make a suit that doesn't look and feel like Joseph A. Bank, with your budget I would not bother to buy any 'custom-made' or 'bespoke' suit

However, if you could raise your budget a bit more, the £499 M&S fully canvassed suit is a excellent choice for entry real suits. I got one for my interview suit and they have served well. Try not to buy any Hugo Boss, or Ted baker.

Sometimes, the Bisector Village Outlet had limited stock of last season RLPL suits, with some RLBL that should cost around £500-700, and frankly absolute bargain

But do try and in fact buy the M&S fully canvassed, they really do worth £499, just not with Zegna mainline tag on

To be honest, £1000 would only get you limited fabric for UK tailors, I had a commission with G. Browne two weeks ago, if you search my thread and J.J minnis cloth set me £1500 for three piece

The only garment they could make under £1000 are the fresco, for a two piece

I would believe most off row tailors are roughly at the same price, unless the firms are in deals, but really if a tailor shop is good with plenty of customers why would they need to put on deals?

With the money OP usually pays, don't think he would have heard any of these fabric.

most of those would be £300-400 on its own in retail price unless you got special deal but very very rare

Thanks for the feedback guys. I will assess the options. Reason I don't want to pay too much are these are work suits in which I want them to look good (can't stand off the peg) but its not worth the investment of £1,000+ unless its for personal events. Unfortunately they don't pay me enough for that quality of workmanship to be worn at work. shog[1].gif

I am aware of Cario Barbara & Co, Ermeneglido Zegna and Holland & Sherry, just haven't purchased these fabrics personally. Would add911_11 be correct on the pricing of these?
