Since this is the EG thread, it may not be appropriate to answer this question here.  But to make it short, I think there could be some similarities between EG’s current strategy and the strategy JMW adopted a few years ago. I am sending you a PM.

To help temper this otherwise riveting discourse on 'why expensive things are expensive'...Here's some Galway's that I just finished cleaning up.

For all of the discussion about EG's expense it's like asking, why would anyone buy a Porsche GT3 when they can get a GTR for less. As long as there are those in significant enough numbers willing to pay that premium for Porsche ownership, Porsche will continue to place that premium on ownership. It's really just smart business.

Sorry if you misunderstood me. It wasn't directed at you specifically. I was just commenting on the topic. Love those Croc boots of yours from the boots forum. Great taste!

To my knowledge GG is going to raise their prices very soon. I would hope EG as the last bastion of true high end English footwear does not go the way of lobb. I for one think most current lobb offerings are abominations 1k boat shoes really?

Why would EG be the last bastion? Is it because GG now is partly owned by foreign investors and Lobb my Hermes? A/S is now French but AFAIK C&J is still "English" - as in made in England and owned by English. But does it really matter who owns it, as long as the product is still made in England.

I lIke certain GG models, I've actually purchased a pair from you good natured gents at skoak. Generally GG tends to be more forward in their designs. Admittedly I enjoy what most would consider to be the more boring traditional English designs. CJ is certainly English and provide great bang for Buck however I don't put them in the same class as GG, EG, or Lobb. Lobb sincerely breaks my heart as IMHO they are a shell of their former self. I will be the first to admit that perhaps I erroneously over romanticize the traditional shoe maker. Businesses provide goods and services to make money, rightfully so I may add. I just hate seeing proud makers reduced to making boat shoes and trainers (first lobb then CJ).

Am I the only one suspecting that EG's price increase might be related to their expanded export to Japan through their new flagship store in Tokyo...?

Admittedly G&G does look more Italian than traditionally English in some regards. I visited most of the flagship stores on Jermyn Street a few weeks ago, including JL, and I saw very little of the boat shoes and sneakers... I dunno if they were out of season but the selection displayed was very tasteful - I dreaded to see more "fashion"-styles but they were not present.
