Weightlifting Shoes

I'm deciding between Chuck Taylor Converses and New Balance Minimus. Any comments on which is better? I'm not really a fan of the converse style...

converse or go shoeless...I was really big into oly lifts a few years ago squatting over 400 lbs and deadlifting 500. You need flat shoes if you lift heavy. Nothing that will roll you ankles. Functionality>style when it comes to the gym.


to qualify this was around 185 lbs so it was fairly impressive given body weight

The shoes that perform best are lifting shoes like these or these Minumus are completely flat and are not cushioned in any way. I lift with them and they perform pretty well. However, I do cross-training and not just lifting and I think Chucks are better for just lifting.

Squat in olympic shoes.
Deadlift / press / bench in chucks or barefoot.
If you are doing stuff like crossfit workouts I would get something else, cant' recommend anything though.

Get something with a wood heel
Rogue fitness, do-win, adidas Ironworks, nike romaleo, risto sports, VS athletics

nobody at the gym cares what's on your feet unless it causes you to get injured

Yea seriously, I have those in my gym bag and just wear a pair of beat up vans that I kick off when it comes to deadlifting and pressing time.

Hard to see how a person could not like chucks.  They're functional, versatile, timless, cheap, durable, they go with practically everything barring formal wear.  There's a reason why chucks haven't changed much in the past 60+ years...

 

But, none of that matters if you don't like 'em.  C'est la vie.  If you're willing to pony up the extra cash, there's plenty of weightlifting shoes out there that will work.  Just look for anything with a minimal amount of cushioning.
