The Official Carmina Sizing Thread - Page 36

If I'm a 10.5 UK in Simpson double monks, and they're just a tad snug, should I stick with that size on carmina boot lasts? Thank you.

I've read a good chunk of this thread and seen a lot of advice on Robert last sizing.  I tried on a pair today in both UK8.5 and UK9, and while both fit, the salesman and I sort of thought the 9 fit better.  He based his assessment on how close the laces closed.  For me, it kind of just seemed like the contours of the 9 matched up better with the contours of my forefoot.  The 8.5 was not tight in any place.

I'm just kind of in disbelief because I haven't seen anyone say to go with your Brannock size for Robert last.  (9.5US/9UK)

I wear a 9D Van Aberdeen, so in US equivalents, My Robert size is possibly .5 larger?

My cycling shoes are 43.5 (43 was too small)

Gucci, Tod's, Rancourt Ranger, Rancourt Blake, Peal & Co Penny Loafers are all 9.5

Is it unlikely that I would be a 9UK on the Robert given this information?

My feet aren't terribly unusual.  Slightly narrow heel relative to my forefoot (C width Van, Barrie) and I have a high instep, but not freakishly high.

Looking for feedback.

Thanks in advance.

Bakes - if you've actually tried on the shoes / boots in question, nobody here is in a better position to tell you which is the better fit. You say the 8.5 isn't tight anywhere - is the 9 loose at all? Are the laces fully closed? What type of shoe or boot are we talking about here?

I can see how you are puzzled that I am asking here when I have actually tried the shoes on.  They are Derbies.

I was wearing medium thickness socks.  Not thin dress socks, not thick wool socks.  They were cotton socks a little thinner than athletic.

The smaller size was not tight anywhere, and my heel was locked in very nicely.  The associate thought that the laces looked too far apart, so he brought me the next size up.

The large size seemed to match the contours of my foot better.  There was slight side to side wiggle room in the forefoot.  The heel was not locked in as securely, and the associate said that the heel slip would resolve itself once the sole broke in.  He thought the laces looked much better on the larger pair.

So the 9 I would say was a little loose.  Not sure if it was TOO loose.

Usually I can tell right away if a shoe fits or if it is not going to work.  But with these, neither size seemed right or wrong.  I am just surprised that these seemed to fit me true to size when other people are sizing down.

Any further input greatly appreciated.

Hey Bakes,

You had me at "my heel was locked in very nicely".

Based on what you are reporting, it sounds to me like the 8.5 is the better fit. Both shoes will loosen up somewhat over time - and I don't like the idea of a starting point with the 9 that fits more loosely at the heel and across the forefoot at the outset. As the footbet settles and the upper gets regularly flexed, I bet the laces on the 8.5 will close up a little bit for you.

That's my take, from the outside looking in.

My philosophy on shoe fit is "snug but not uncomfortable." You can definitely tell when a shoe is too short. I agree that the UK8.5 sounds like the right size.

Thanks for the input, Gents.

Ambulance - I like a secure fit as well.

They are shell, so won't stretch much.

Carminas are so damn pointy, length would never be an issue for me.

8.5 sounds like the correct size to me.

How slim is the Simpson last? I am a slightly narrower than medium US9.5D (I wear a UK9D in EG). I wear UK8.5 in most Carmina lasts, including the Uetam. Would I wear a UK8.5 in Simpson?

That's what I would order if I were you.

Thanks again for the input, Gents.  Tried on the 8.5UK again with different socks, and it seems almost perfect.  Just a little tight across the vamp, but not impossibly so.  For anyone else who comes across this in the future, here are my sizes

Carmina Robert Last 8.5UK

Alden:

Van/Barrie US 9C

Hampton/Aberdeen US 9D

Brannock US 9.5

Tods/Gucci US 9.5

Nike/New Balance US 10

(So basically TTS -.5 for UK/US Conversion and -.5 for sizing down on Carmina Robert Last, = 1 full size down, as is typically recommended)

Anybody have any thoughts on the fit of a pair of 7.5 UK Philadelphia last Carmina double monks? How about the Forest last on a pair of 7.5 UK loafers? I have never owned Carmina, but I am a perfect 8.5 D US in Alden or US made AE. In cheaper casual (Sperry or LLBean rain shoes and NB running shoes) I am a 9D. Would these Carminas be a little tight if they are in the medium width?

Hello, some sizing help on the Detroit last would be appreciated.

I'm a 10UK on the Forest, Alcudia, and Simpson lasts, and a 9.5UK on the Rain.

I'm guessing I'd be a 9.5UK on the Detroit as well?

hi

I didn't get a response to my earlier post, so went ahead and ordered the string suede loafer on the Uetam last in 10.  It fit snug across the forefoot, although there was some slippage in the heel.  I wore it in the evening with my regular office socks, and was able to walk around comfortably.

I am now looking at one of two shell chukkas, lasted differently - one in the Rain last and one in the Simpson Bota last.  I have a bit of a bunion on my right foot (it is also about 1/2 size bigger than my left), and a somewhat high instep.

Should I take a 10 in either boot/last, or size down for the Rain last as it is wider?  I read a few pages back that you normally size up for a boot?

I am a 10E in EG 888, 10F in G&G TG73 (but somehow fit into a 10E in the MH71).

Would really appreciate any help and advice, as I am in Asia, and would like to tray and take advantage of Carmina's offer of free shipping.

Thanks in advance.

If you wear "F" in EG I would steer clear of a normal width Simpson lasted shoe. I wear 8F in the 888 and I can wear either 8F or 8.5E in the 82 last. I wear an 8 in the Rain last. (All UK sizes). My guess is that you would be the same UK size in the Rain that you are in the 888 F. Hope this helps. As always, no substitute for trying them on
