1960's CASHMERE Trad/Ivy/Mad Men 3-button sack jacket from B. Altman! c. 38, 40. OFFERS WELCOME!

Will Ship To: Anywhere

Beautifully cut from thick, luxurious utterly soft cashmere (not the thin stuff that's so common today) this lovely vintage jacket is a classic sack, with a three-button front and just the hint of a lapel roll at the top button. It has very natural shoulders. The colourway of this jacket is terrific, managing to be both utterly 1960's and also very conservative--as befits a jacket from (the now defunct) B. Altman, which was described by The New York Times in 1965 as "a carriage-trade store, safely conservative". The background is a deep, rich mocha brown, accented with darker brown vertical striping. The jacket appears to be at least half-canvassed, possibly fully canvassed, and is half-lined. It has three button cuffs, and features a center vent.

There's no country of origin, but it's pretty clearly union made in the USA--as far as I know no other country was cutting jackets in quite this style in the 1960s, with the exception of made to measure and bespoke houses catering to expatriate WASPs. It was made for B. Altman--the first of the great department stores to make the move to Fifth Avenue when the area was primarily residential, and the store to set the trend for mansion-like architecture outside and spectacular interiors of the Great American Department Store.

This jacket is in excellent condition, and has clearly been carefully cared for over the years. It does have some loose stitching in the vent, which would be an easy fix, or else ignorable, and some staining in the lining by one armpit, which could (and should) also readily be ignored. Given these flaws, though, I'm

asking just $50, boxed and shipped in CONUS, OR LOWER OFFER. International inquiries are welcome, with shipping at cost.
