Following up properly after interviews

I had an interview just over three weeks ago for a position at a hedge fund. They liked me a lot and brought me back for another round the next day (they got me done in two days because I had to travel for it). I sent a thank you note the next day to the most senior guy, who would ultimately make the decision, and he told me he was impressed but would have to meet other people first before making a decision -- apparently I was the first person they'd met and the job posting only actually went out that day (I was introduced through networking). He claimed they were on a relatively near-term timeline, whatever that means.

Because of the good feedback I expected to hear back quickly. I waited a couple weeks before following up by email last Monday, just letting them know that I'd be returning to the city and would be happy to meet with them if it made sense. He said he was travelling that week but would reach out when he got back. It's been a few days into this week and still nothing, marking 3+ weeks since the interview.

This is making me very anxious since I'm pretty eager to leave my job. I know there's nothing I can *do* except wait but does anyone have any suggestions as to whether I should reach out again and how? I was thinking about following up Monday of next week, which would be four weeks from my interview and two weeks since I last reached out. Any thoughts?

(Yeah, I'd probably roll my eyes at this post if I were you but I'm sure everyone knows how nerve-wracking this wait can be.)

Yeah. I would reach out again next Monday. That would give you that 2-week buffer since you last contacted him.

Good luck.

Sweet spam, but seriously, how should I follow up again? He said he'd be in touch but it's been over a week. I've heard hedge funds can have really long processes, and I was only the first person they met, but at the very least I want to get a timeline..l.how can I reach out again without sounding like an overanxious *****?

sounds like a no go. It's possible they are too busy and didn't have time, but sometimes it's because the hiring manager doesn't like confrontation. Figures if he ignores you long enough you'd go away

Front office.

I know I might just be being hopeful here, but I find it hard to believe that after getting good feedback from two of the most senior guys with whom I met ("Obviously we liked you so we wanted to bring you back" / "I'm impressed") they would just ignore me. That's never happened before when I've been rejected from a job after meeting so many people. In any case, I just want to know how to follow up without being pushy/rude after he's put the ball in his court, albeit two weeks ago.

Things can change very quickly. Maybe their fund incurred massive losses in the last week and your application is just about the furthest thing on their mind right now.

I mean, if you were the first candidate to get interviewed, they're probably interviewing a lot more and waiting to finish interviewing and finally give out job offers.

I've known people to be placed on hold until interviews were over. Some received offers after weeks. Some didn't.

I think it's all about how well you stack up to the competition at this point.

That may be the case, but its not a good reason to not follow up.

**** happens and routine hires fall off the radar. If you aren't interacting with a dedicated HR department that handles hiring (and most hedge funds won't be large enough to keep most of the process removed from the actual workers), there is always the chance that they got busy and couldn't follow through.

Or they reached out to someone else but are planning to call you if that person says no.

Who knows...we've made people offers the same day they interviewed and we've called people back a long ass time later (I certainly waited longer than they told me I should have to wait), it partially depends on when you need them to start and partly on whether or not you have time to think about it.

Was the time frame discussed during the two days of interviews?

If not ...

Unfortunately, it doesn't sound good. But best of luck.

I've had a interview that advanced as far as you described, and then ultimately ended with the hiring manager never contacting me again. Very strange, but unprofessional **** happens sometimes. Doesn't hurt to send a follow up 2 weeks later

Sometimes they get back to you, sometimes they don't. But you should never really start seeing "the light at the end of the tunnel" until they put a contract in front of you or at least start asking to fill out pre-employment ****. Before any of that happen, anything can happen. I've had interviews where I thought the job was in the bag and no one even called me back to say I didn't get the job. I've had others where I thought I crashed and burned and they offered me the job a couple days later.

Hiring is weird, a lot of the time.

True, didn't mean not to follow up just meant to always continue pursuing new opportunities and not get hanged up on one firm.
