JMRouse, that case looks good, and seems to allow for the iPad to rest at different angles. The Apple case isn't as user-friendly as I thought it'd be.

I mentioned before that some cases are having issues with the magnets not working. It's a problem facing most brands of case makers and apparently some people have had issues with this model, but Targus has stated they will replace them for free if you get one like that. They will let you keep the defective one till the replacement arrives. That's good enough for me.

Well the reviews sure do seem promising. facepalm.gif I realize many of the negative ones were because of the magnet but there were quite a few also complaining about quality, positioning, etc.

Any recommendations for a nice iPad sleeve? I'm not really in the market for a case, or one that I can use to prop up the iPad. I like the feel of using it naked, and don't really use it for anything but content consumption anyway. smile.gif

Well thought out article on why Apple may release a smaller, 7.85 inch, iPad.

Not sure I buy it, but it would blow up the market even more for Apple. A $250 to $300 tablet of this size would be perfect for students. It would also put a death blow to anyone trying to gain market share by undercutting Apple's prices.

The one area in his argument that struck me as off base, is Apple not using an IPS display for this iPad "mini." While it may work for the iPad Touch, it wouldn't for a tablet. The screens on these devices are too important and non IPS displays typically have crap color reproduction and viewing angles. If Amazon can sell a $200 tablet with an IPS display, then couldn't Apple at these proposed price points?

I read a lot of the reviews and most seem focused on the magnet. There are some complaining about the build quality, but you also see some saying it's good. It's only $50 so I am not expecting anything great out of it. If I end up not going high end like I originally planned, then something like this will do.

The good thing about going with a sleeve is your options are much more open. Lots of nice ones made out of leather and waxed cotton. Why not stay away from nylon and get something a little more substantial. It's also a better investment then a portfolio style case. Apple will always make a 10 inch tablet and any future models should fit in whatever sleeve you buy (these things get smaller and thinner over time, not larger). A portfolio case will be useless in the future if you ever decide to upgrade.

What price range are you looking to stay in?

You are right, of course. I was speaking about it versus some of the more expensive options out there. I don't expect crap for $50, but I also don't expect it to be one of the "best/nicest" quality cases on the market.

The model in question I linked to is a viable option. Thin and light and will protect it from scratches and damage. Can be used to prop the iPad up as needed. Colors available other then black.

I'm only using the smart cover till I find something else. I don't plan on using it long term or anything.

You should either...

1. Use YouTube and check out countless reviews of pretty much every popular iPad case to get a good idea of what they entail exactly.

and/or

2. Go to a local retailer that has a healthy stock of iPad cases and see if you can try any of them out.

It's tough to purchase an iPad case online if you've never seen it in person or haven't checked out a worthy video review online.

As to the 7.85" iPad Mini rumor, I do believe we will see it before the end of the year, but I do also believe it will have retina display.

7" iPad mini? Why? Why not just drop the price of the iPad 2 even more? Maybe it's personal bias, but those 7" screens just don't do it for me.

I have Amazon Prime so I get free 2 day shipping and easy returns. It's not a big deal for me to order it online if I do decide on this model.

My problem with the Amazon Kindle Fire was not so much that the screen was 7 inches, but that they decided to go a widescreen ratio. This made the tablet even smaller feeling when used in portrait. I agree that 7 inches is kind of small, but one kept in the same aspect ratio as the current iPad wouldn't be too unusable feeling.

If they do release a 7 inch tablet it would need to be cheaper then $299. Otherwise you are right. They could just lower the iPad 2 to $299 next year and continue selling it. Of course this is Apple, so who knows?
