Tim Cook has just delivered the first news regarding performance of Apple's new iPad for 2012: he says the product had a "record weekend" and the entire team is "thrilled" with it.

Here's what we're hearing: within the first 12 hours of the iPad's launch — between 8AM and 8PM local time — the store sold over 13,000 new iPads, an average of about 18 per minute. Daily store revenue, which typically falls between $700,000 to $1 million this quarter, was up to $11.5 million on launch day. On the supply side, the Fifth Avenue store had more iPads out of any store in the US — not surprising at all given its landmark status, but also partly in reaction to last year's iPad 2 launch, where they were selling out faster than employees could open boxes. While we don't have a model-by-model breakdown, we do know the 4G models are selling at a better-than-expected rate, while Wi-Fi models have been more readily available.

No sooner than we heard Apple's Fifth Avenue flagship store do crazy numbers — 13,000 in 12 hours, about 18 per minute — the company went official with some "record breaking" launch day sales statistics. Since March 16th (just last Friday) Apple has sold over 3 million new iPads across the globe. As Phonescoop's Eric Zeman aptly points out, that's more than RIM has sold PlayBooks and Motorola has sold Xooms in a year... combined. For some perspective, the original iPad took 80 days to sell 3 million. Although we can't find an iPad 2 launch weekend sales figure from Apple (oddly enough), Reuters that following weekend reported and estimated 1 million over its first three days. According to our admittedly rough math skills, that means the new iPad did three times as well.

So, I'm hanging out at the Apple Store this morning. Been here for or half hour or so, and will probably stay for another half hour when my "restore" issues are hopefully resolved. I won't leave until everything is running perfectly. Folks here have been rather hospitable, and helpful. Place is busy, not to mention an interesting collection of people.
