It doesn't replace a laptop.  It created its own niche in between a laptop and a phone,

I'd argue it does, IF you have a DESKTOP at home. If you have a home base computer, it (or any other tablet) has completely obfuscated the need for a "traveling computer". Now, just use the iPad (with or without a keyboard) and that's all you need to be away from home.

Pads/tabs just don't have the versatility, speed or general capability of a PC or lappie e.g. copying and pasting text from browser is buggy, and they're less consvenient running 2 or 3 progs on screen at once e.g. when in a lecture or writing while browsing and running a PPT at the same time.

The only benefits I see off the bat is ease of use in financial apps, presentations for business, and if I can get textbooks on it. That will be allot nicer since I decided to commute by bike... I guess if I just wanted something to lodge around the house and get lose in styleforum.

But I just tried to cancel the leather smart cover via my Apple Account, says this order is not associated. Tried calling and went through the process, said due to high volume of calls we don't want to talk to you good bye... After watching a video, I don't see the point and want something with protection.

Copy & pasting on an iOS device like the iPad is a joy. Not buggy at all. I know that some other tablet platforms don't handle it as well, but it's really not an issue for the iPad at all.

You are right on running multiple apps on screen at once. iOS is designed to be a single application at once focused device. You can multitask and notifications have made things like running chat programs easier, but you still only view a single app at a time. Some people see this as an advantage as it limits distractions when working on things like a text document. I know some journalists have found an increase in productivity because of this.

Having said that, there will always be a need to a laptop to some people. If you are one of those people then by all means pick what works best for you. Tablets and laptops are different devices, each with advantages and disadvantages.

On a side note, have you seen what Microsoft is doing with Windows 8? I'm not a fan at all of it trying to be two different desktop metaphors at once, but Metro (the tablet UI) is looking fantastic. It actually allows for some apps to be placed side by side and run at once. Instant messaging apps being one of the top kinds for this. Ultimately, I think Windows 8 could be the next Vista because of how confusing it will be for consumers, yet there are some interesting things they are doing I would like to see Apple pick up on for future versions of iOS.

I'm on the fence about ordering the 32 gig with LTE or the 64 gig that's Wi-FI only. Before anyone says it, I don't want to spend anymore then this so it's one or the other. I think the extra 32 gigs could be nice, but so would having LTE on the go. I was talking to a friend last night who has the iPad 2 and he mentioned how he never needs 3G on it.

What's your guys experience who own an older iPad? Do you find you use 3G a lot? Worth the extra up front and monthly cost? I have an iPhone so it's not like I would be without the ability to check my email on the go.

GD it! I'm finding myself wanting an iPad now, not necessarily a 3, but just want one.

I have a good workstation, and a good laptop....but I've seen the light. This really is a niche, and not meant to replace a lappy.

I'd never use it to do any 'work' in the traditional sense (pounding out docs in Excel or Word), but I'm sure there are plenty of applications that would make my work life easier/more productive just like I have found on the iPhone 4.

For the folks comparing tablets negatively to laptops, here's the difference that makes all the difference. You can't hold a lappy in your hand and read off it. Even the swank Thinkpads with the reverseable screens are cumbersome by comparison.

Retina display is going to make reading on the iPad 3 a much more enjoyable experience, that's for sure.

Yeah, I'll probably end up waiting until the 5 comes out to get a 3 LOL

Still, I'm jealous of the lawyers who only have to carry around an iPad to read their briefing, whereas I have to lug around bankers boxes full of 4 inch notebooks

And the Westlaw Next integration with iOS is absolutely fantastic

Just get the basic 16 gig model. You can always resell it later on and upgrade if you need to.

****, I could only afford one now if work bought it for me, which they won't. I had to campaign for a whole year just to get Windows 7 and Office 2010, which I just got.

Now, I'm working on getting our admin to buy me a copy of Adobe Acrobat heh.

The white 16 & 64 GB Wi-Fi + 4G on AT&T shows ship date on the 19th, others still show delivery by the 16th... I preordered the black 64 GB Wi-Fi only and hope it out sales to make a profit. If not, no big deal. I will play with it for a week and hopefully like it. If not my parents said they would buy it at the original purchase price... I would probably go and buy Applecare+ for them though...

Just wait until you set foot in an Apple store and have to deal with their staff. You'll swear off Apple for another 20 years.
