So work has given me quite the promotion and put me in charge of running a new office for my company. I am a young kid, 24, and realize I’m probably at the younger end of the age spectrum for this forum. I know many of you are in management positions, so I was wondering: If you had one piece of advice for a young guy in charge of his first office, what would it be? Any and all advice/help is very appreciated.

Being is charge is the easy part dealing with the hate is going to be the hard part grow some big balls and be prepared to have them broken by some of your older more jealous colleagues

Oh yes and never forget to always have an exit strategy as you will get bored if you are truly ambitious

Be the same guy as you are, be happy and respect all when you work. So that they feel you are one with them, but in the same time show them you are the ''boss'' and in the time they will like you because you will be bossy/happy guy.

And if that dont work with someone (allwas will be someone) fire that ass, easy :)

Almost same exact position: 24, newly placed in a high responsibility management position. What I've seen is that if you can be reasonable with your staff and be able to tell them exactly why things need to get done, they are much more inclined to do something, even if they do it begrudgingly. Employees aren't going to like everything you tell them to do, but if you outline exactly why it has to be done, it is much harder for them to shirk their responsibility.

Or I could be wrong and my employees are plotting to kill me now.

This sounds fishy. What 24 year old is handed an office?

What kind of business? Check cashing? Temp agency? Retail store?

My advice: you are going to make a lot of mistakes. Learn from them. Read some books on management. Think before you say things and take actions. Dont be one of the guys. Dont be Mr Nice Guy. Dont let anyone fuck around at work. Dress better than the staff. If you try to be mr cool boss you are going to fail. Set expectations and make sure they are delivered on.

Be reasonable. I am not advising you to be an asshole above, so treat them well but be firm about it because its your ass.

Oh, trust people until they give you a reason not to. Tell them that. You'd be amazed how effective it is: nobody wants to be hovered over so they work hard to avoid it.
