I do not wear a lot of jeans. This is my second pair in five years. They are a pair of raw denim ACNE, and I am quite happy with them in most respects, aside from the fact that they must be shortened, and the width must be reduced at the foot. My questions is, should I do this before the first wash? Will the jeans shrink around my ankles?

Please help out a denim novice.

I would rinse them to take care of shrinkage and then get any alteration taken care of before you start wearing them. The reason for this is that if you wear them and then alter them, the fading will be messed up. If you alter them before shrinking them, you may end up with too short of an inseam and funky proportions.

Sounds very sensible. However, how does one go about rinsing jeans?

Some googling has also alerted me to the fact that wheter or not the jeans are "sanforized" is critical. Sanforized jeans kan be altered without rinism, it seems. Or am I mistaken?
