They don't notice my grenadine tie and my pin-dotty socks

Woe is me.

Not that my jacket is too tight (there's no W.O.E. here).

But I live in Ireland. A sartorial wasteland. Everything's square here, not just the shoes. I buy my stuff online, just like a regular iGent. I wear ties more expensive than my suits, and shoes more expensive than my prostitutes socks.

What hope have I got? Must I move to Ah-merick-ahhh! and join forces with Acrid?

Aren't you in the land of Donegal tweed, across the border from Scottish cashmere and English shoes? Lucky, lucky man!

Move to either Stockholm or Milan. Or New York.

But will their socks be properly maintained? What's Iroh's going rate?

You got the stupids my friend, for the less than a cost of tie you can fly to Milan, Paris or London and shop like a whore.

Man I miss living in Europe and paying next to nothing to visit another country for the weekend.

Correction - While I may be able to fly to these places on a song, shopping in them tends to add to the cost.

That being said, the point of this thread was not to whail (whale? wail? whaaaaaaeeel?) about not having nice things. I think. I'm drunk. Jameson goes down smooth.

Also, we make great big woolly sweaters.

Maybe they do notice, but they're too polite to mention.

Well as long as you know for yourself, really.

Correct. Dress for yourself first. If you think you look maaahvellous then you won. Beyond that, if other people compliment you, consider that a bonus.
