How does too small slim fit look?

Hey guys. I have a couple questions that I was hoping you could help me answer.

I recently bought some custom made slim fit shirts from MODASuite.com. They are nice but don't fit well and I'm kind of at a loss of how to describe what to do with them. To clarify when ordering a custom shirt one specifies 6-8 measurements. But when you search for info of how a shirt should fit, or more appropriately, how your shirt looks when it *doesn't* fit, you get info only on collar, waist, and sleeve length... "Make sure you can fit two fingers, that the buttons don't pull, and collar ends at the wrist." What of the other measurements?

What I want is a very slim like GQ form fitting shirt. I'm not a big guy, 5''7", 165 lbs. Not jacked, but it shows that I work out. I'm hoping that I can describe my problems with my shirts as they appear to my eyes and feel on my skin, and that you can help me figure which shirt measurements cause them (sure, some will be more obvious than others).

1) Easy one. You can see the diamond shape of creases made around my stomach in pic1. The buttons pull in the stomach and it's tight, especially when sitting. The bottom button creates a crease when I walk or lean. The smoothness of the fabric over the stomach in pic 3 really shows how too tight the shirt is here. I attribute this to the stomach/ midsection width measurement. But how much? An inch? One and a half?

2) The chest is form fitting, there is little room does not feel uncomfortable. Does a too small chest measurement look odd in other ways besides "pulling buttons?"

3) There is a crease in each armpit radiating upward and inward toward the neck, seen in pic 2. The upper arm sleeves also crease in this area, pics 1 and 2. I have no idea what is causing this. The chest? Armholes? When I reach in front of me the line of tension runs across the anterior deltoid down to the armpit where the sleeve meets the rest of the shirt. It's even there (slightly) when I relax. I suspect this is a chest circumference problem.

4) There is an odd "shoulder horn" at the back of each shoulder, a fold that protrudes backward when my arms are down, pic 3. The sleeves begin at an appropriate height on the shoulder so I suspect the shoulder width is okay. Which of the following could be the culprit? Upper sleeve diameter too big? Too much shoulder length (doubtful)? Again, too small chest circumference causing bunching?

Thanks guys.

The shirt looks good in picture 1, but if it's uncomfortable then it is too small.  A too-tight shirt looks comical, but this doesn't look too tight, so I suppose comfort is your only consideration here.  If you were to add an inch or two in  circumference to the chest and waist, you might be happier.

The crease at the arm pit is probably caused by a too-small chest and a too-large yoke (the seam that runs over your collar bones).

I believe the "shoulder horn" is there because the fabric at the seams is stiff, and the arm hole is too large.  If the arm hole were smaller in circumference, you probably wouldn't have this problem.

Also, the sleeves look a little big - especially around the forearm.  Would look better IMHO if the sleeves were tapered and made a little smaller.

Looks pretty good to me too.

You may not be used to something fitted.

When you read this advice, keep in mind how idfnl's shorts fit. mwink[1].gif

From what SF considers to be a good fitting shirt, this is very similar to that archetype.

You need to move your cuff buttons in.

Hey guys. Thanks for the replies.

The pic is kind of a poor representation as in action the shirt is literally skin tight on my abdomen. You can see a hint at the too-tight wrinkle at the bottom button in the first pic. When I sit down I'm going to pop the bottom three buttons. As for the sleeves, they're too long. At the wrist the shirt is actually *too* tapered, but it doesn't appear that way b/c the sleeves are too long overall and are bunching at the hand. And I agree that the odd protrusion in the backs of the sleeves may be related to the armhole, but the shoulder measurement on this shirt is larger than others I have. Perhaps that is also contributing?

What I did was I went to some of my old shirts and measures a bunch of them.. Some fit well in the chest, others in the abdomen, yet others in the hips, you get it. Comparing those measurements w/ this particular shirt I think I need to

1) add an up to inch (probably less) in the waist/ narrowest portion: 17.75" --> 18.25"

2) reduce the shoulder measurement (the yoke, I'm presuming): 19.5 --> 19"

3) keep the chest as is; I have other shirts that fit well at 21"

4) increase the sleeve/wrist circumference: 7.5" --> 9" (sleeves aren't closed in the pics)

5) shorten the sleeve length: 34.75" --> 34"

6) increase the width at the bottom/hips: 21" --> 22"

I may just have to buy a new shirt. lol

More likely buy a new shirt.

Its too small , all there is to say, if it feels uncomfortable it's too small, fitted shirts can be like that, I am a small guy too, 5,7" and it can be difficult because I do not like baggy fitting clothes but anything that feels too tight and constrictive does not work either. Shirt looks good though and does not look too small to be honest, you might want to ease up on the bench presses maybe or try a ribbed v neck sweater.

Should've posted this earlier.

This is a messed up order from Proper Cloth, and it is way too tight.  Notice the pulling at the buttons.  Your shirt isn't tight when compared with this shirt:

Just a thought that the waist suppression is too aggressive (armpits 21 and waist 17.75). Hips will depend on your waist and hips size.
Generally for waist it's about 1.5" slimmer from the armpits if you want the shirt to be tucked in.

Do a test by wearing the shirt tucked in and have a sit. If the buttons don't pop up and you don't feel uncomfortable then the shirt isn't too tight.
