How do you write a great mystery? If you're BSG and Lost, you make up as you go along without an ending. If you take long enough to tell the story, people will just forget all the loose threads.
For example, if you watched BSG you have to remember that at the end of the (second?) season, they came to the planet they all came from and found that their colonies were all named after the signs of the zodiac and had flags with the present-day constellations on them. Constellations change over time, so it was a big twist "reveal" that the show was set in our future. Then the writers gave up on that idea and just said "God did it," it being trick the audience for no reason at all.
If you want a sci-fi show with a great ending watch Babylon 5. Season 5 was great!
