Let 's all hope he was able to find laundry detergent before left and that it's still safely in his possession. Shudder to think what would happen if someone didn't have laundry detergent whilst traveling. It's a staple. And tough to find.

Why did the guy end up going to Cuba? I missed most of this thread, but doesn't it cost a lot to just go to Cuba, and wasn't he looking to get more mileage for his dollars on some sort of endless trip? I was honestly expecting him to do Europe...

why did he buy 10 backpacks? why did he ignore all of our advice? so many questions, so few answers.

It was part of his "to-do" list. It's really not that much to fly to Cuba. When I went back in '05, it was something like $350 r/t (oh the irony of flying business to Cuba.) He was finding prices closer to $4-500 from Jamaica. So really, it costs about the same as it would to fly to just about any country in CA from the US.

I told him that I didn't regret seeing Cuba but in the same breath I'm not sure I'd recommend it to anyone unless they NEEDED to say they had been during Castro's time. After a few days in Havana, it goes from "novel" to "depressing," at least for me. Outside the capital, there are still some pretty towns and country but it's still a pain in the ass, especially as an American. Judging from the email I got from him today, he's figuring that out quickly.

Please tell me he did not shoot the sheriff? If he did, I hope he did not shoot the deputy.

Not sure what the CWP laws in Jamaica are like.
