Manicures - Page 3

I have gotten pedicures only twice. Once when my feet were really jacked and the second time a few months back. I have never gotten a manicure and would get around to it sometime. It's just that I find it difficult to spend $50 on my hands and feet when I only spend $15 on my head. Otherwise I cut my nails myself. I try to have clippers at my desk and at home.

By the way, be careful about the tools the people use at these places. All items they use on your hands or feet are supposed to be brand new for each customer, but in my two trips I think they used used ones. I watched an exposé on these places on Fox 5 here in DC metro area and the infections people get are sickening. Also, never get polish. Ever.

The best reason to get a manicure is to learn to do it yourself. Get some cuticle-remover and a cuticle pusher (wood or metal or both) and you can do a 90% perfect job yourself.

There is a whole debate over cutting cuticles versus only pushing them back. If you push them back and brush your nails, the cuticles usually fall off on their own after a few days.

My attempts at cutting cuticles have failed, and I once got a nasty infection doing so (had to get antibiotics from doctor).

Beware of nail salons which use spa pedicure tubs, esp. busy places. It's impossible to clean the tubs adequately between clients (esp. the drain area) so you can get a fungus or an infection. Some infections leave permanent scars.
