New jacket - unfinished shoulders?

Thread Starter

Hi,

I just bought a double breasted Jil Sander cashmere blend jacket from Mr Porter. It's shoulders each have a single line of thread running from the collar down to the shoulder peak. Is it safe to simply remove these? What are they there for? I presume they're for a tailor to adjust the shoulders if necessary. As it happens, I don't think they need adjusting so am I good to get rid of them myself or should I take it to a professional?

Thanks!

It's just a basting thread. Most good suits have them. They are there essentially for vanity, though some believe it helps maintain shoulder shape while the coat is in the store (this makes no sense to me). You can remove it yourself. There typically is a small knot on the end closest to the collar. Snip the end closest to the shoulder and pull out from the collar end. Or your tailor can do it when you take it to him/her for any other alterations.

This happens to me quite often with my suits too, perfectly fine to do it yourself.

It is nothing more than RTW manufacturers trying to con hapless customers into believing some hand work has taken place during manufacture of the garment. It has no utility other than that so remove it.
