Losing My Mind - Fretting Over Sport Coat Fit

Long time lurker, first time poster. That said, I picked up this sports coat yesterday at Nordstrom Rack and have been obsession over the fit ever since. I think this concern has more to do with me scouring the forums and unearthing all manners of information on shoulder styles, waist suppression, dimpling and so on. I'm driving myself absolutely insane. Hopefully you can shed some light on the situation.

The jacket itself - John Varvatos Star USA - is very comfortable, although I don't know if it's sized right. I'm 5'10", 160 lbs. and this is a 36R, made from wool gabardine. As you'll be able to see, I have a wonderfully lordotic spine - hence the booty sticking out - although I'm primarily wondering 1) if the waist appears too suppressed, and 2) if the shoulders are too pronounced. Should I keep it (and have it pressed), or return it and try for something better?

This is how it looks online:

Thanks in advance.

The fit looks pretty good. Where are the matching pants?

If you have lurked here you probably know that Varvatos is not a highly respected brand, so I will ignore your question about returning it for something better.

In terms of fit, it looks pretty good. Perhaps a bit big in the shoulder, and I would not say the waist suppression is too pronounced, although relaxing it a bit might help your vents fall more naturally.

If you like it, get it tailored a bit and enjoy. Stop obsessing over a cheap jacket biggrin.gif

For what it's worth, I am wearing a charcoal grey suit from Varvatos today and I am also a 36R. I am a similar build to you (5'11" ~150lbs). I love the way it fits and it's my most complimented suit. I am considering buying more patterns and styles of the same suit.

when you look at the second button on the model's photo, you can guess that the jacket has been pinned in order to show more waist suppression. That's why even if you look quite similar to the model, the fit is not the same.
I like the sleeves but I would take it to the tailor to alterate the waist.

Dude, it's a noob with two posts and a pinstriped John Varvatos sportcoat. The fit looks fine.

Thanks everyone for putting my mind at ease. I'll just go to a tailor and have them let out the waist a touch. (Don't worry, I've learned not to entertain the idea of moving the buttons.)

I guess I misrepresented my case by questioning whether I should return this number for something "better". I should have clarified that "better" meant something in the sub-$200 ballpark. I'd love to, someday, go the bespoke route but, until those lottery numbers come in, I'm a little ways away. Oh! Or I could marry rich.

TRINI is right. Both of you may want to look again. This time study the fit from behind and the side view.....

I've outlined in red the obvious fit problem...^^ ...the jacket looks almost simian from behind.

I've placed an arrow on the OP's concern. This is a terrible fit. No jacket should bunch like this. Even a Safari jacket won't bunch like this.

The waist suppresion alone cannot be remedied (not mentioning the shoulder misfit).
The front view is barely passable but the side and rear issues can only draw one conclusion:
Return the jacket.

With your height and weight 7th Art, you should be looking not at 36R but 38R or 40R.
The jacket should drape in a nice smooth curved line over your butt and not bunch up like this one does.

JV mainline is very nice. JV USA, not so much.

I'm w/ Acrid on this one. As the OP mentioned, it's a little tight in the lower back and the shoulders are a little wide, but I think it looks fine if that's the look you're going for. If not, and if it was over $100-150, or if you don't really need a jacket now, I'd probably return it, get something from a thrift store, and save my money for bespoke.

If you do need a coat, and don't want the hassle of sifting through thrift stores, you might look Joseph Abboud sport coats, which Nordstrom Rack often carries. They have soft shoulders. In fact, they're totally deconstructed with no shoulder padding at all. Their fit is trim and contemporary, but should be roomy enough for you in the waist and seat area. They have wider lapels though, which I think is an advantage. In fact, other than a slightly high button stance, they're pretty much perfect imo

Wouldn't a 38R be even bigger in the shoulders though? Given his height and weight, compared to mine, I'm thinking that a 36R may not be so far off.
