How tall are you? I'm 6'2" and my jacket sleeves from outside shoulder seam to cuff are usually around 25.5".
I'd say entry level custom jackets run around $1000 in USA.

Because the placement of the shoulder seam varies, and where it falls on any one person's shoulder varies based on cut and the person's shoulders.

Giving a shoulder measurement too would be way too much. If you have to vary three factors, you have to stock an insane amount of shirts for something that won't make a difference to many.

Entry level custom sport jackets are really $1000? I would have guessed around $750

Resurrecting this thread from my more nascent SF days, does anyone know of any decent retailers of 40XL sport coats? I'm honestly not sure if I really NEED 40XL, I could go with a 40L, but most of the 40L that I see are too short in the shoulders (generally around 18.5"-1.75", and I'm 19"). If anyone knows someone that makes a 40L with 19" shoulders that'd be great.

I'm really bummed because I really wanted to get http://www.ebay.com/itm/NWT-1395-CANALI-Light-Brown-Blue-Windowpane-Wool-Summer-Sport-Coat-42-L-/280887831392?_trksid=p4340.m185&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC.NPJS%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUA%26otn%3D5%26pmod%3D380440554590%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8674339956828515789#ht_2161wt_1398 this Canali sport coat, but at 44" it's a bit too big in the chest.

Could that possibly be tailored down? Does Canali make 40XL? Does anyone else for around $450? (Yes I know that was the price of the over 50% discounted eBay auction, but it was perfect for me)

I've been told that a jacket should show about a quarter to half an inch of sleeve, and I have a 37 inch sleeve length. Do I have to go bespoke? Is showing an inch to an inch and a half fine? Does a size 40 double long exist, so that the sleeve length would be closer to what I need?

Xlong does exist but it may be hard to find a 40 because taller men have wider shoulders. Only a very rare narrow shouldered grown man that tall would wear anything under a 42 of perhaps some tall immature boy who is not fully grown.

Paul Stuart and Phineas Cole sell 40XLs.

I was afraid these would be around $1500. Thanks for the suggestion though!

I have never seen a 40 xl at Paul Stuart. Few stores even carry xlong and you ave to go to a tall men's shop or that. Stuart does have a tiny selection of xl but they're all 46 or more with an occasional 42. xlong is for men over 6'3" and since tis is like a fraction of 1%  regular stores don'tbother with it.

FWIW, I have very long arms too. Most of my jackets are 26.5" from sleeve to cuff. None are bespoke.

I don't think my problem is the sleeves per se, but more in the face that I have 19" shoulders, which are usually in 42L or 44R jackets, and a 40 in chest.

There all manner of people offering MTM, some well known some local, some good some worse than bad so you will have to ask those convenient to you. Visit them and discuss what they offer and charge.

Napkin math suggests he'll want 27.5" sleeves... Which is a bit more of a problem.

Jacket lengths & patterns (eg the waist of the jacket ends up being on your ribs ffffuuuu.gif get odd here too...) are a problem too if you're tall as well ...

I recommend you look at Bookster.

Interesting, I'm basically the same height as spoo, 6'2" ish, but my sleeves are usually 25.5 sleeve seam to cuff when the shoulder fits snug. Guess my arms aren't long.

Do you know the typical entry range for MTM Sport Coats?

@Snedley - Paul Stuart or at the very least Phineas Cole definitely carry a 40XL in various base models. I know this because I bought one a couple years back. The blue doeskin blazer was going for about $900 back then.
