Also, I support the 3 car team idea. More chances to weigh drivers against each other.

Me too..

3 is always a crowd and the all team dynamics would have to be modified and less bipolar during races..

I kinda remember a few teams running 3 cars in the past. Can't remember if was exciting or not, but I think they would have to restructure the payout or else the mid to lower field teams will be pushed even lower as the top teams will have more cars. For example if the teams had 3 cars this season, you would see Mercedes 1-2-3, Williams & Red Bull fighting for 4-5-6-7-8-9, Mclaren, Ferrari fighting for 10-11-12-13-14-15 with maybe a Force India car squeezing in to one of those positions. Force India, Sauber, Lotus will be fighting for the same positions that Marussia and Caterham were occupying all the time so they will be the next to run out of money very quickly.

Three-car teams as the rules are currently written are a horrible idea. Consider that Mercedes would not be one of them. Also consider that if a third car finishes in a points-paying position, not only will that driver/team not get the points, neither will anyone else.

There's nothing wrong with F1 that telling Ferrari to compete on the same payout schedule as everyone else and a more equitable division of the profits wouldn't fix. Ferrari has convinced everyone that F1 would be lost without them, but without F1, Ferrari quickly becomes Lamborghini.

Curious what rule prevents Merc from a 3 car team?

Didn't know about the 3rd car not getting points. That would need modification.

I agree, better sharing of $ solves many woes, but with any vested interest, good luck getting any large team to agree to share any more money. The big teams are probably quietly hoping for 3rd cars as it reduces overall competition.

F1 needing Ferrari is a long standing myth. It seems like bullshit Bernie dishes out to gloss over his sweetheart deals. F1 needs Ferrari more than Bernie, that I can say with certainty.

I wonder if the f1 payout structure is even legal within EU competition rules. I was reading the Friday press conference transcript with team principals. Apparently FErrari gets $170 million a year from FOM even before taking into account the WCC payout. That's more than the budget of most teams. Incredible.

Thank Bernie for that. I'm starting to come around to the idea that F1 might be better w/o Ferrari. They're just too entrenched in the sport.

Martin Brundle interviewed a guy before quali who made the very interesting point that the NFL, the sport that generates more $ than any other on the planet, distributes it's money evenly between all owners.

Lastly, I hope the teams boycott. Show some balls.

My friend attended the race in Austin last weekend. He reported that you could carry on a conversation at just slightly above normal speaking level with the cars going by. He said the Porsche Cup cars were louder. I don't think he disliked the sound, just wished there were more of it.

The cars now sound in person as they do on TV. Previously, you had to be there to experience the real noise.

Today's the big day!

Congratulation to Lewis, but I wanted to see some fight between the mercs.
Unreal the gap advantage they have compared to the rest of the field, not good news for next year

Damn good weekend so far! Hammy is WC, Pacquiao crushes Algieri..... now I just need the 49ers to bring it! (yeah I know...and I'm from DC :) )

Anyone else think they should do away with the interview post-ceremony? Glad they had Brundle do it... I like Lauda as a driver but please keep him away from the mic.

The worst was Nelson Piquet in Brazil. He basically told Hamilton he had a hot girlfriend and moved on to Massa. Bizarre.

A most satisfying end to a championship I thought would be unfortunately decided by DNFs. LH's disproportionate share of misfortune during the season certainly made him work hard for this second championship. For his part, NR's qualifying this year was quite impressive. If he can translate that into better race pace/craft, LH will have his hands full.
