Newbie Needs Advice - Tailored Suit and Shirts

Thread Starter

I have a friend whose tailor from Bangkok is going to be In town next weekend and he has asked me if I would like an appt with the tailor to have some clothes ordered.

I would love to do this, but I have never had clothes tailored for me before, so I’m looking for advice on what to look for, questions to ask, suggested styles, fabrics, thread count, pocket and lapel styles, etc. Everything.

I am looking at ordering a few dress shirts and a suit.

From what I understand, I can bring pictures of suits and he can duplicate them. I’m not 100% what my options are to be honest, but that was one option I heard about.

Personal Info: I am 5’10”, 185 lbs, dark hair and olive skin. I over-heat easily (so I would need a material that breathes well).

Any advice?

Search rather than ask, spend your time rather than anyone else's doing YOUR research. Tailors from Bangkok are questionable and the intricacies of MTM cannot be set forth in three lines.

If all else fails go along try it, if you like the result you are happy, if not you have wasted a hopefully small amount of money. What is in it for your friend. Doubtless he will be getting commission even if only a couple of free shirts, that is the way introductions work.

I am doing my research at the same time. The more I read, the more I realize how much I have to learn. Unfortunately, the tailor is coming in 8 days, so I don't have a lot of time. But I'm trying....

Ordering MTM clothes from a tailor from Bangkok that you are going to see once when you don't know anything about tailored clothing? That cannot turn out well.

A big part of MTM is knowing what you like and don't like. It sounds like you don't have any idea. Why would you do this if you can just buy off the rack? Much better to buy a couple of suits or at least jackets before you venture into MTM. You an mitigate this by reading lots and looking at the WAYWRN thread.
