Modern Tailor has gotten so much more expensive (with shoddier fabrics)

What's up with MT? They've gotten so much more expensive in the past few months. In the past - i.e. about a year ago - I was able to get many shirts for $40 (including S&H).

I now am forced to look at other companies for my shirts. Any suggestions for a great quality company?

By the way, I'd like to stress that ModernTailor is excellent, but I don't like the idea of paying $80 when the Brooks Brothers on Newbury charges $60, and they are 120x2.

I've been very happy with moderntailor, and I've purchased over 20 shirts from them.

The quality of the shirts is generally very good, and that combined with the awesome fit, and the personalized styling is definitely worth it to me. The style of shirts I choose cannot be found at Brooks brothers and definitely not the fit. If the Brooks Brothers shirts fit you perfectly, then I say go ahead and buy your shirts from them, but I find their sizing to be strange, their slim fits not particularly slim-fitting, and difficult to find Windsor collars.

If you're looking for $40 made to measure dress shirts, including shipping, I think you'll have a hard time, cheapo!

I noticed that while the price ranges are fairly similar, 'vouchers' seem to be a thing of the past and a majority of the lower priced fabrics are now cotton/poly blend, which is too bad.

To get a spread collar with longer points, french cuffs, no pocket and longer tails, I have found that ordering T.M. Lewin during a sale and getting alterations is a decent option for a sub $50 shirt.

I'm puzzled. If you can get shirts that fit well from BB or TM Lewin or Tyrwhitt or whatever, why are you interested in online MTM?

Complaining that a shirt that is made to fit you is more expensive than an OTR shirt just doesn't make any sense. Of course it's more expensive. It's made to fit you.

I won't speak for the OP, but if I'm looking for shirts in my price range I'll consider MT as a first option because I know I won't need to do any alterations when the shirt arrives - I'll even pay a bit more if its still in my price range. But, if I look on MT and the fabric(s) I want are out of my price range, then I'll look at RTW and do alterations. With Lewin, for example, their slim fit is right on in th body, but I still find the sleeves much too blousy. Shipping can be another factor in the price dept.

Short answer: RTW requires alterations, MTM is more convenient, at the end of the day I'm still broke/cheap.

Were there ever any $29.99 fabrics? I always started at 49.99 2ply ones and last check few days ago I see some of them @39.99. To me MT seem to have got cheaper than anything.

I started buying MT May '10 about a year and a half ago. I bought MANY shirts at $29.95 for the fabric. Of course this doens't count the other stuff.
They had many fabrics to choose from about 1 year ago or less. I also remember many great fabrics.

also, i still see many of my old fabrics there - there's one wrinkle free striped pink shirt there. I bought that for $30. Now, it's $60. http://moderntailor.com/items/common/fabric/pink/p98-s-1261662626006.jpg

The thing with ModernTailor is they have a low end of perfectly serviceable shirts that you can have made up with split back yoke, nice butons and shipped to you for less than $75. This is a good price compared with local MTM makers. (I'm not sold on the quality of ModernTailor's collar construction, so I am not sure it's an amazing value.)

But when you start looking at the nicer fabrics, the price shoots up considerably and the price differential shrinks substantially to the point where it's harder to justify saving a few bucks by sacrificing being able to speak with a human being, see real fabric swatches, etc. And again, I am not wild about their collars. As someone said above, the vouchers and great weekly sales did a lot to make MT a deal you couldn't refuse, but now they've slowed down on those things I think the local shirtmaker is a better experience.

^^ I'm no expert, but I really like MT's cut away medium collar with 8cm points. Usually get the normal stiffness with inserts, just got a shirt with a soft collar plus inserts, and I like both options...

It would really change my mind about a lot of this if they still offered vouchers. (HINT HINT HINT HINT)

I used to order from them constantly, but as others said, the prices have gotten to be ridiculous.

does it make much business sense to sell to poor people? they will always try to nickel and dime you.

Let me say once again that OP's username is awesome.
