Shoe Sizes & 'Stretching'

I'm not very experienced at buying quality shoes. I have one pair of Barkers in a size 9 (UK), which are a great fit.

This morning, I went to a local shoe shop and tried on some Loake 1880 Chester 2 shoes in various sizes.

The shop measured my feet (on a machine) at very slightly over 8 1/2 (UK), medium width.

I tried size 9 (UK) which felt quite roomy. My feet could move very slightly in the shoe. There was no pressure experienced on my feet.

I tried size 8 1/2 (UK) and the shoes felt snug. Just a little bit of pressure at certain points of my feet.

I did actually manage to get into a size 8 (UK), but they were definitely too tight.

Should I go for the 8 1/2 and assume there will be some 'stretching' of the leather, or go for the size 9 and be prepared to wear some thicker socks or perhaps an insole if it becomes necessary?

Thanks,

Steve

You can get 8 1/2 in "G" or you can just take them to the cobbler and stretch them a bit, if for some reason you can't find a wide shoe in your size.

I had a pair of 8½ Loakes stretched and they turned out ok, on the other hand a pair of Church's I got stretched didn't because their construction was akin to a tank. Personally I prefer using an insole so I'd probably go for the slightly roomy ones. I find it easier to get a good fit with an insole vs having shoes stretched.
