I was sifting through some of my older suits (some my fathers, some thrift store finds), and I came across a curious suit I think I picked up at a thrift shop some years ago. Back when I bought it, I didn't know much at all about suits, all I knew is it fit pretty well, so I bought it.
The suit is a peak lapel, ventless, single breasted, single button suit with convex cloth covered buttons. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't these all traits generally attributed to tuxedos? The only thing this suit does not have in that regard is the satin or grosgrain faced lapels.
Now I would like to have a tuxedo to own just for fun, and without going out and trying to buy one (budgetary concerns for something I'm not sure I can find a regular use for is always a consideration), would it be possible to convert this suit into a believable dinner jacket? It already fits me very well, and I feel like if I could somehow get those satin lapels on convincingly (and cleanly), it may do the trick. Of course attaching the stripe to the pants as well is a consideration.
Any advice on this? Is it possible to get these attached by a tailor, seamstress, etc? Is this is a foolish endeavour? It seems even if I did buy a regular tuxedo, inexpensive ones always seem to be notched lapel, 2 button, vented jackets. If stores can hock a business suit with shiny lapels as a tuxedo, perhaps I can convert a suit with the prominent features of a tuxedo into one?
Forgive the lack of details on the suit manufacturer or pictures- I am out of town and don't have that info on hand.
