Ash, which they had in abundance due to coal and wood heating/cooking

Admittedly I'm no historian or building materials expert, but I seem to remember that in the pre-synthetic-fertilizer days ash was very valuable. Back in colonial days they used to burn down entire forests just to get it.

I would guess natural wood ash is good for acidic soils but coal is mostly toxic. In any case I have plenty of it in my subfloor space, so I am well insulated. It also blocks sound pretty well, when someone walks on the floor above me I cannot hear them at all.

Does anyone have first hand experience with recessed halogen lighting? I'm planning to go with these to spot an entry way, some seating and art, but I'm unsure if they are best for kitchen since they aren't really diffuse.

Wasn't straw commonly used also?
