We're getting ready to change the heater/AC and my wife is looking at me....peepwall[1].gif She may as well, however, since I'm sure as hell not paying some contractor 20k to do it.

HVAC stuff is one of those things... my brother does it for a living.  When he worked as part of a bigger organization, he got huge discounts on the units.  At a smaller organization they get much lower discounts, and individuals can't even buy.  Those AC units that people get charge $5k installed, one company he worked for was buying them for like $500-750.

Floor tile seems like it would be the easiest to install too...

Although if I were considering vinyl, I would probably do linoleum instead.

I was thinking the exact opposite.  No need to level the wall, and if I screw up, I can at least use my kitchen.

I believe it, no way that 1-2 days of labor with two guys plus equipment should be anywhere near the prices charged.

So I just had another guy come out and give me a quote on my tiling.  He's even pricier.  What the actual fuck.  Why does it cost $30/sq ft for labor only to install porcelain tile?  Especially when that tile like 14x14 or 18x18.  The only tile that's small is the backsplash - 3x6.

I would get it was a really tiny job where a day is wasted doing some dinky job, but they're saying 2-3 days.  By my math, they're charging me $200/hr.  That's almost as bad as SG's HVAC.

I just hired a skilled licensed and bonded  carpenter to lend me  a hand building a couple of light wells  . Labor only $75 an hour.

Yeah, but you live in the People's Republic where everything costs 4x what it should.  I'm in flyover country trying to hire some people who fled their homeland when the Iron Curtain fell. :D

Point is I think $75 is pretty reasonable . You guys are talking rates 2-21/2 times that . This guy has a couple of trucks an office and a storage yard. He doesn't stand in front of home depot

Yeah, I'm going to go with the first guy.  He came in at less than half these prices I was just quoted.  He comes recommended by the guy who did my siding.

One guy literally had a line item "move fridge and stove before and after job $100"
