Having mature trees makes a big difference. Every time I drive by a new development of spec houses without a single tree, I can only imagine the AC bills.

Just got a quote back from a framer, and I'm definitely just going to GC the renovation myself. There have a few quotes that have been about the same price as the GC's estimate, but then I have the 20% markup and profit for the GC. But the majority have had additional savings. All of the subs I'm using came as referrals from coworkers, so I have seen their work.

What is it with women and their hate of ceiling fans? I know this has been discussed here before but I still don't get it. I understand ceiling fans aren't the greatest things to look at, but their function severely outweighs the aesthetics in my opinion. For the record, my wife hates them as well.

My wife has never had any objection to a ceiling fan. As for asethetics, there are some nice looking fans. The problem is the cheap big box store ones -- particularly with light kits. I have yet to see a fan that looks better with a light kit.

They're getting better with LEDs. Add a couple inches to the bottom of the fan motor and you have a decent flush mount light.

Yes, they're getting better. They're getting closer to not making the fan look worse.

I have a fan from modern fan company, looks fine. Definitely an improvement over the builder unit that was there previously.

Oh, we haven't even gotten to the aesthetic implications. This is just about not liking air blowing on her.

Ah, I use mine on the slowest setting and to me it's no bother but my wife does find it annoying as the seasons change. However, when I suggested replacing it with a lamp.....:hide:

I like using a fan while sleeping as it moves the air around but it makes my bald head colder which will sometimes wake me up.

The reclaimed brick veneer went up today, they did pretty well. If anyone needs a bricklayer in the DC area, let me know. Brick is 1/2" cuts from a group of 1800's Boston buildings.

Camera coloration is off, fyi.

Is that for an accent wall? I like the variation in brick color.

Thanks. It's for 2 walls, so half the room. Half the room is brick, the other half are interior walls with 5/8 drywall and insulation for sound buffering.

I gave them the instruction to spread out the colors, and checked in periodically, they understood the ask first time so I let them work.
