Which is precisely why it's silly to say that wearing brown shoes with a navy suit is unacceptable. The conventions are different when you cross the Atlantic.

Back to the topic of brown suits... I personally have a couple brown suits (one dark brown and the other tweed with some blue and gray pattern). Both get regular wear.

I think if you are considering a brown suit, go for one that is on the darker end.
