Something is off with the toe tip.
Looks like the suede has worn down,
although I think this is deliberate.
That would eliminate them for me.
Same shoes without that "feature"
would be fine.

I love the Chukka boot.

Here's the best boot I've even worn.... picked up my Redwings at the COOP in Decherd, Tennessee.

Right, but what about a boot for those times when you're not working on a building site?

Casual affordable boots = Red Wings or Allen Edmonds seconds. I wouldn't consider anything else.

Agreed. I have a pair of Timberland that look very similar, but they do not have the darkened toes.

Those are kiddie boots. 

 

Casual boots for grown ups are suede or kid chukkas or Chelsea's 

 

Those red wing things are work boots. Work is not casual, especially if it's the kind of work where you have to wear those boots.

you may be looking for something a bit more dressy, but I have a pair of these, the 'plainest' black boots I could find, very comfortable and rugged

not as blocky/bulky as they look

They hate those here. I used to wear them but moved up to RM Williams Mallees.
