Need Three Suits

Thread Starter

Hey Guys,

I am looking to supplement with wardrobe with three new suits: one navy, one charcoal, and one black (or, if that doesn't look right, then another navy or lighter gray).  I am heading home to New York this week for business and thought I would stop by Bergdorf Goodman and Barneys, but I wanted to get your advice on which brand suit to buy first.  I would like to spend around $1,700-$2,200 per suit, but I can spend more or less if that makes more sense.  I wear a suit every day, so it is important to me that the suit be fully canvassed.  I'd also like for it to have working buttons on the cuff because I think it looks cool to leave one unbuttoned, but that isn't a dealbreaker.

The possibilities so far that I have considered are:

Ralph Lauren Black Label

Giorgio Armani

Valentino

Zegna

Michael Andrews Bespoke

Gucci

I know Gucci's suits are made by Zegna, so if that is crazy please just let me know.  I am relatively uninformed about all of this, and thought it would be best to bounce my ideas off the forum before I went and spent $7,000 on three suits.  I was thinking of maybe buying two suits from one shop and then another suit from another shop, or buying all three at different places.  What do you think?

Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Of your list, I would only look at RL Black Label and Zegna, but I'm not sure who Michael Andrews Bespoke is. But why limit yourself to Zegna or Black Label? Being in New York, you should have many brands to choose from.

If you're willing to spend $1k+ on a suit, you shouldn't have to compromise. You need to decide what you want in a suit:

What kind of shoulder do you want?
What kind of body do you have and what cut do you want?
What kind of lapels do you want?
What length do you want?
There are many more details, but these are the main stylistic details to look into other than pattern/fabric.

Ralph Lauren Black Label has a structured, roped shoulder that is slightly "extended." They generally have pretty slim lapels with an aggressive cut.

Zegna, on the other hand, has many models.

Thank you for the response.  I do not mean to limit myself to the brands I listed.  Is there a better type of suit I can get in the $1700-$2500 range in New York City?

As for the style, I am young and pretty slim, so I prefer slimmer fitting suits.  I do not know that much about the types of shoulders and whatnot, but I do know that I like the Fitzgerald cut from Brooks Brothers.  So a classic look with a more modern edge I guess, and thus the trimmer labels and slimmer fit.  At the same time, I want it to be a suit of the finest quality, with full canvas.  Can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Depending on your body shape, there are some good and some less good options. Tony Romo hit the nail on the head regarding Black Label; a lot of people try to make it work as it is a forum darling, yet most look ridiculous in it. For reference, Tony Romo and I are the same size and similar measurements if I remember correctly, so we would give you the same RLBL recommendation.

If you're able to fit the Fitzgerald well, I have really been impressed with what I have seen from Oxxford's 1220 line. It is constructed beautifully, the fabrics are top notch, and they offer a slim silhouette with classic detailing that is slightly less extreme than RLBL.

What are you looking for in the suit besides what you have listed?

My final recommendations are:

1. Go with lighter grey as the third suit over black.
2. Find something that you like and stick with it.

Michael Andrews Bespoke is something Dan Trepanier (The Style Blogger) has been pushing. They seem to be pretty fashion forward, and there are some threads here about them.

Depending on how you fit, you shoulder consider MTM, especially If you're unusually short (like me), tall, skinny, etc.
