Had me going too. And to matters worse......I actually looked at that 'synthetic cashmere' and thought to myself..........my that looks like that fake crab shit you see at the grocery store........

WOW. Never heard of manmade cashmere. The label clearly says: 100% cashmere, made in Italy.

I cannot imagine a reputable firm like Bloomingdale would intentionally mislable it.

It's not about them "mislabeling" it per se. Strict restrictions for declaration and disclosure of textiles are really only enforced in the purposes of custom duties and quotas. Technically it is not illegal in the U.S. since the company producing the fabric for Metropolitan View declares it "Cashmere" - and good luck in International arbitration proving this otherwise.

That being said, Metropolitan View (owned by conglomerate Macy's) knows exactly what they are doing. Synthetic crabshmere allows for much higher profit margins - which allows them to mark ridiculous sales off of inflated MSRPs (i.e. $1,095) and still make healthy profits. Few customers - if ever - buy items from Metropolitan View at full retail price, but they can afford to sell their items at 80% off since they cost nothing to produce.

Illegal? No. Unethical? Yes.

It has the potential to krill the luxury cashmere industry.

Wow. Thanks for the information.

It is legal to label synthetic cashmere as cashmere!

The question is then, how do average customers know what they get? Synthetic or real cashmere???

It should be ILLEGAL!

I saw a Geoffrey Beene scarf the other day. I thought it was cashmere because it was so soft. The label was marked "100% acrylic."

You can tell if it's real by using a "pinch" test.

If it has a "sharp" feel - what the Italians call chelae - it's real.

I know better than to pursue anything remotely resembling inexpensive cashmere - as the good stuff is NEVER cheap.

Is it legal to call this stuff cashmere???? Where is 'big gov'ment' when we need it? It ought to be against the law!

I've seen some stores advertising jackets as "wool", when in fact they're mostly polyester, e.g. "wool overcoat, composition 70% polyester, 30% wool".

If the label is not misleading, that is acceptable.
