Here's some from the conservative side. A friend of mine posted a question about a proposed tax in the Atlanta metro area. One of his friends, who happens to be insane, started up with some kookiness, and I poked the bear. "Reasonable Chick" is also included, just because I loved his responses to her. Note that ellipses are where I edited out posts that didn't address Insane Dude's insanity.
[MrG's Friend] For my friends informed about the upcoming Transportation Referendum on July 31st, what is your reasoning for voting for/against the initiative to improve traffic congestion in Metro-Atlanta?
[Insane Dude] Govt already steals from me. I will not give them the impression of having my "consent" to do so.
[MrG] Aren't you "consenting" by using the things the government provides with that money, [Insane Dude]?
[Insane Dude] Nope. They've already stolen my property, and just because it is stolen does not negate the fact that it is my property. If your car gets stolen, is it still yours or is it the thief's?
[MrG] I don't have a social contract with the car thief that says he'll provide me with a functioning society in exchange for my car. Taxes aren't theft; taxes are the cost of society borne by those who benefit from it.
[Smart Friend of MrG's] I'm interested to know how the government is stealing from you. We have a contract (the constitution (federal and state) and enumerated laws) that you choose to agree to by being a citizen of this country. If you do not like the contract, there are a number of other countries in the world to choose from. You may not like the revenue policies of this country, but they are far from theft.
[Insane Dude] [MrG] and [Smart Friend of MrG's]: The "social contract" is a myth. I never signed crap, and per that Constitution y'all cite I am a subject of this country due to actions I cannot control - namely, the place of my birth. NO ONE (other than immigrants, whom the GOP hates) "chooses" to be a subject of this country. (NONE of us are citizens.)
[Reasonable Chick] No one is forcing you to be a citizen of this country. You can leave whenever you like. Out of interest, what country is it that you believe is so much better than ours that if given the choice, which you DO have a choice, you would rather reside ?
[Insane Dude] [Reasonable Chick]: No one is ALLOWING me to be a citizen of this country - and that is the problem. In a citizen/country relationship, BOTH have EQUAL power. In a subject/country relationship (what we have in the US), the country has all the power and the subjects are just that - subject to the country's whims.
[Reasonable Chick] You didn't answer my question. Where would you relocate to that is so much better than the US ?
[MrG] OK, [Insane Dude], I'm not going to try to be the one who convinces you that the social contract is real, but you still give tacit consent every time you use a taxpayer-funded amenity. So, the road you took to work, the clean water you drink, and even the internet you used to type your message are all evidence of your acceptance of the government's legitimate collection and distribution of taxes.
Either way, I would sincerely be curious as to how you propose we fund society without taxes.
[Insane Dude] [MrG]: Voluntary contributions. Same way we funded war pre-WWI.
[Reasonable Chick] And if you want so badly to make a change in our government what steps are you taking to make that happen ? Running for office ? Better educating yourself on our constitution and policies ?
[Insane Dude] [Reasonable Chick]: I probably have a better understanding of our constitution than you do... and yes, I have run for office twice as well as have held State Party positions higher than anyone who has commented here thus far.
[Random Female] [Insane Dude], I don't know you, but if you are THAT unhappy with our country, go find another one you'd rather live in.
[Insane Dude] [Random Female]: How about I stay, and work to remake my homeland the way our Founders intended?
[Reasonable Chick] Interesting, you seem to not have any understanding of how our tax system works. And if you did in fact hold a office, that is scary. Yet again I ask, what country would you rather reside in than the US ?
[Insane Dude] [MrG]: A government small enough to be bond funded is not large enough to treat me as anything other than a full citizen...
[MrG] So you want our entire government to be bond funded? How do you propose we collateralize that debt if we can't collect taxes?
Also, I assume, then, that you pay as much respect to the free rider problem as you do the social contract?
[Insane Dude] [Reasonable Chick]: I have a pretty solid grasp of our our State Sponsored Theft program works. It basically runs on the premise that if you don't pay your annual ransom, the State will send goons with guns to put you in a cage - preventing you from earning any money - until you do.
[Reasonable Chick] Once again, what country is it that you find so much better than ours ?
[Insane Dude] [Reasonable Chick]: Was there any nation in 1700 better than Britain? (A: Not really) Just because a nation happens to be the best currently available doesn't make it right. Indeed, it could simply be the most benevolent tyrant - as Britain was prior to the 19th century...
[MrG] Well, [Insane Dude], given the fact that you'd be using the government's resources without paying into the system when your bill comes due at the end of the year, I'd say you were stealing, and we lock up thieves in Georgia.
[Insane Dude] [MrG]: If we truly locked up thieves, every single politician and bureacrat in the State would be in jail...
[Reasonable Chick] So you admit that you are living in the greatest nation in the world ?
[Insane Dude] define "greatest". Also, being the "greatest poison in the world" isn't exactly the same as "being the best in the world". Or being the smartest kid in the idiot class isn't the same as being Einstein. Pick your analogy there...
[MrG] Haha. OK then. Lock 'em all up. Cops and firefighters, too, right? I mean they're being paid with ill-gotten gains. Oh, and doctors at public hospitals. And religious figures who enjoy a subsidy through tax exemptions. Let's just get everyone who has benefited from tax-funded initiatives, since they're benefiting from stolen money. I'll see you at the jail. Of course, they're state-funded, too, so I'd imagine we won't meet much challenge when we decide to escape.
Could you please lay out your plan to mitigate the free rider problem? You seemed to have glossed over that question, and it appears to be a glaring hole in your plan.
[Insane Dude] I'll worry about the free rider problem when you figure out how to solve it in your own system... at least my system doesn't involve government doing the very things it orders me not to....
(OP steps in and asks us to get back on track. Thread dies)
