If Trump had been wise enough to listen to that, we wouldn't be talking about this silliness anymore. Of course it was theater. The Democrats totally set him up for this and he fell for it as hard as you could possibly fall for an obvious ploy.

Pence easily deflected the discussion about the Khans and the Trump controversy, but he's actually a politician and can rein himself in.

You sort of did right here what I said people tend to do. If I was so inclined I could find things to criticize/challenge in Kahn's speech..but I do not as it's just political theatre.

Completely agree with the bolded.

Khan is being treated with kid gloves. I remember seeing Cindy Sheehan being eviscerated by veterans, and their family members.

Actually, Fox News did not show Pat Smith's speech live. Instead, they showed a Trump interview with Bill O'Reilly. Anybody watching the RNC on Fox News would not have seen Ms. Smith give her speech live. CNN and MSNBC did show her speech live.

Fox News also did not show the Khan speech live. Again, CNN and MSNBC did show it live.

In addition to terms like "false dichotomy", lawyers have also been known to use terms like "false equivalence".

A California Democrat on Wednesday launched a change.org petition calling for Donald Trump to a undergo mental health evaluation.

Rep. Karen Bass, who was a physician assistant and a clinical instructor prior to her political career, said the Republican presidential nominee may have narcissistic personality disorder, which could severely influence his actions as commander in chief.

"Donald Trump is dangerous for our country. His impulsiveness and lack of control over his own emotions are of concern. It is our patriotic duty to raise the question of his mental stability to be the commander in chief and leader of the free world," the petition states.

"Mr. Trump appears to exhibit all the symptoms of the mental disorder Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). Mental health professionals need to come forward and urge the Republican party to insist that their nominee has an evaluation to determine his mental fitness for the job."

In her petition, Bass laid out the nine symptoms of NPD, which are a grandiose sense of self-importance, a preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, a belief that he or she is special and can only be understood by others with a similar status, a requirement of excessive admiration, a sense of entitlement, interpersonal exploitation, lack of empathy, envy of others and arrogant or haughty behavior.

"I call on mental health professionals to publicly urge the Republican party to conduct an evaluation of Mr. Trump and officially determine if he is mentally fit to lead the free world," Bass added in the petition.

i feel like i apply fact checking to both sides and we know that's all that matters

i liked this. it was a lot of political theater and moralizing from the podium but i dont think thats all it was

We need to teach both evolution and creationism in schools. Equal time so we aren't biased one way or the other.

But isn't she rabidly anti-war? The Khans aren't

How else am I supposed to accept world views different from my own? Clearly I'm in the right and everybody else is just varying degrees of wrong.

Wait, I'm confused. Is it the MSM or veterans and families of veterans who are being unfair and hypocritical here?

Or, maybe, as I said earlier, things like context and what people actually say factors into the reactions somehow.

I'll just note in passing since nobody has explicitly acknowledged it in this thread (that I've noticed, anyway). The Khan weren't just selected by whatever political strategist selected them because "oh we found the family of a dead soldier willing to say shit about the other candidate". They were selected because their religion and ancestry, and that of their son the veteran, offer a counter-point to Trump's use of bigotry and prejudice against Muslims and anyone who kinda looks like or might secretly be a Muslim. That's clearly part of the context of the political theater here. That's a batting practice soft-toss made by Trump himself.

My favorite part, on more than one level, was Kahn waving a copy of the Constitution.

I do think it's sick of both sides to pimp grieving parents.
