Not really political, but it is more of a CES pool thing:

My second grade kids asked me what it was like in 1000 years ago. I started my response off with "well, it looked a lot different. There weren't any white people to start." The students first response, "So, just slaves?"

"No, slaves weren't in America until white people enslaved people in Africa and brought them to America. 1000 years ago all of this land was part of the Ho-Chunk Nation, it was just Native Americans back then."

"Like with horses and volcanoes and dinosaurs?"

"Well, horses weren't in America until the Spanish brought them over and while there is still a volcano in America the dinosaurs were all very dead millions of years before a 1000 years ago."

The kids didn't quite seem to understand what Native Americans were, which was sad but not surprising. I think conversations like these though remind me that we really could be doing a better job with Act 31 in schools.

Yes, slavery is purely a product of white people. Certainly American Indians didn't enslave other tribes, and there certainly wasn't any slavery in Africa before the white man.

She needs to also inform them there were no Indian casinos 1000 years ago.

Slave comes from slav as in slavic peoples ie South Eastern Europeans. Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria etc

The Sultan of the Ottoman Empire for a few centuries at least sent the Tatars up on huge slave gathering missions. The sexy blonde blue eyed girls wound up in his harem, the boys were put in a military academy to produce an elite, totally obedient unit, the Janissaries. The rest were put on the Mediterranean market. Felons in Christian Europe could become "galley slaves".

Then there were the slaves in the Roman Republic...through antiquity back to Greek city states.

The US-African experience is just most recent. It's not really a system that can be pinned on any one peoples.

Brazil didnt outlaw slavery til like 1898 or therebouts.

In Greco-Roman slavery one or one's descendants could work out of and become restored to citizenship.

The scope and scale of the evil of European transatlantic slavery lies in the idea that: a) it was perpetual across generations and b) an entire portion of the human population with dark enough skin to qualify as black was fair game, propped up with some bullshit or other like the curse of Cham. So if you want to pursue some bullshit moral relativism (early modern Europeans were just like other evil peoples wah wah) then one fair comparison would be the way the English shipped off a number of Irish people to the New World to be slaves. This approximates the opportunistic-conquest model of slavery. Except it was a tiny appendage to a much more massive infrastructure of evil.

tl;dr: go fuck yourself

When two nobi had a child would not that child likely end up nobi also? No idea as I've only stumbled upon something once about 30-40% of the Korean population being nobi at some point in history.

by god you're right. oppressive indigenous caste systems (often dating back to antiquity) are the moral and political equivalent of the early modern transatlantic slave trade. hey, wait a minute--there's still a caste system in india. this must mean we could revive a race-based slave system and if anyone complains, we could say, "hey, there's a caste system in india!" and we'd stifle all arguments.

I knew you'd see the light if I brought that up.

Slow your roll man. I never said any of the incidences of slavery through human history were < = or > evil than any other. I just think it's interesting to get the full historical picture on it.

I don't know if that's directed at me, but my point is that it is frustrating to read people bragging about teaching children something that is fundamentally not true. It scares me a bit that one day I might have kids that are subjected to that crap.

Sexism, intolerance...a good amount of oppositional values vs the national progressive values etc etc

That being said Im a libertarian, "culture" is a shifting bag of BS, it's whats on the inside that counts and we're all vaguely Chinese in the distant future (Blade Runner) so who gives a fuck.

I like Chinese food.

Xenophobia is a such complex thing to apprehend because we're all full of contradictions.

The key IMO is to aim for a blend of shit to keep things interesting. A lot of the US just has whiteasses, black folk and Latins. Three things. Ya need more than three. When it's a big pot-pourri noone can even be bothered to get all annoyed and xeno at any little ethno-cultural group. This includes bothering to get all uppity and asseholey at those few people that "dont make an effort to fit in" or w/e with the national identity or even learn english. Ya cant really enforce this and their kids always do anyway via tv, music and school.

I am putting this here as I'm sure it will be on all your FB feeds later today.

A student did a "visual art" project at a Buffalo university/college. She put up signs around campus labeling bathrooms and water fountains "White Only" and "Black Only." The outrage and tears from trigger events were predictable. Here's a comment from the article I read:
Quote:

It's not funny, it's not cute, it's just another white ignorant that does as white people do and think that they are so special because they get away with it! I have never hated anyone but, I am fed up with white people they just disgust me!

Of course the student was black too.

Of course. Only an "artist" would think of doing something like that. Hope she doesn't try that during her shift at Coffee Bean.
