The apprenticeship is 5 years
The total wage package is just under $100 no benefits are provided by our employers . The distribution of these monies are determined by the membership . No money is distributed in any manner that has not been decided upon and voted on in an election open to all members . If the members decided to take every penny of that $ < 100 home on a paycheck that is of no concern to our employers. A simple majority vote would be all that is required
You do not interview for a job . Every man sent to a job is fully qualified to fill the position called for . If that is not the case the employer is free to send the man back to the hall and request a qualified person be sent out

You just quoted me three times. Add that to the "wage" calculation!

Oh, I go to several conferences a year, all travel, meals, and enrollment covered. There's another $20 an hour for me!

Unions were kinda cool when truckers had to burn their hand to stay awake or get canned. Hoffa style yo. But I think most of those sensible dignity "wins" are covered by normal legislation these days.

Incorrect. To begin with, due to Obamacare, those employers need to provide a qualifying healthcare plan or pay a payroll penalty. At the very least, and I'm not even going to bother with analyzing the rest, that contract has to pay for a qualifying healthcare plan. There's probably some sort of entailment due to the 401a plan as the employer, not the employee, sets up contribution requirements, etc.

Also, serious question: does it take 10 years of apprenticing to become a journeyman? Once you are a journeyman, do you move up at all? Is there a master steam fitter that gets paid even more?

You two guys are too smart for me. I'm gonna go watch Hoffa again and see if I can switch to englade's team.

Ok guys I'm not gonna play this little I make more than you game anymore . I'm just trying to point out that there are advantages to an employee/ employer co operative relationship . I have raised and college educated 3 children , bought and paid for three homes , traveled the world extensively , enjoyed a high level of health coverage and am presently retired with a yearly income in excess of what I made working a 40 hour week . Every penny of income I received was a result of wages paid to me by employers who was more than free to find help elsewhere . No contractor in our area is forced to sign an agreement with our union or hire our members yet they do so year after year willingly . Every member of our local who has been willing to put in a day's work for a days pay has enjoyed these same benefits . Why this would threaten anyone so much that they would feel the need to somehow make it seem less than it is is beyond me but it is what it is

Brokencycle : 5 years apprenticeship you then take a turnout exam if you pass you are then a journeyman
Foreman journey rate+ 5%
General foreman j/r+10%
Senior general foreman j/r +15%
Any employer is free to pay a man as much as he wishes but not less than the journey man rate . I have been paid journeyman rate + 30% , a truck and gas . This is not uncommon

This is absolutely wrong every cent of our total wage package is delt with within tha framework of the Union and is therefore under the total control of the membership .i am not going to go into detail about how we do this , retirement committees, finance committee, health and welfare etc all positions filled by elected rank and file members, but that is how it is handled . This is a labor union and by law a level of transparency is required that surpasses that of private businesses , so if you are reallythat interested I'm sure this info is out there in the public record somewhere . Incidentally the members of these committees preform these duties without pay in addition to their regular jobs

Why is this comic so long? Why can't it just say "hispanics are from Spanish speaking countries and Latinos are from Latin America?"

One-Quarter Of Mothers Return To Work Less Than 2 Weeks After Giving Birth, Report Finds
With a comment of something like "I get 11 weeks of paid vacation for child birth (if I have enough sick time banked)... I feel this is really awesome compared to most Americans but terrible compared to the rest of the industrialized world. Then will go on a rant about how we need more laws to guarantee these fundamental rights.

It's stupid, and also wrong. The distinctions that dumb comic are trying to make are a recent invention of overly sensitive assholes. The dictionary doesn't make any such distinction and neither does the US census.

They are all just dirty brown people anyway, there's no reason to try to categorize them.

"Hispania" was the name of the whole peninsula, including Portugal. I never understood why it's just supposed to refer to Spain the country. Historically Portugal was considered just another of the "Spains" before the rest of them became one country called Spain.
