I help make trails for the American Hiking Society, I assure you, the trails are specifically designed to go by the most interesting parts of the mountain. You're free to go off on your own, of course, but these things are planned. In detail. By groups of volunteers drinking far too much alcohol and studying out of date maps. You're welcome.

People say I never get lost. Perhaps the way I think is better for artist. When you look at good art there is a lot in it. Sometimes each brush stroke is a story of its own. All of them together is quite a Symphony.

Mixed metaphor but still nicely put.

Cheers.

Agree, that is the aim nowadays and especially for recreation. Some older trails were means to get from here to there, so lots of off trail to see. Havent done much trail work. No doubt your muscle relaxant works.

One day, H, we will embark upon SF's first in-the-woods meet-up.

Well, maybe not the first in-the-woods meet-up, but the first not to include sodomy and fewer men returning than set out in the first place.

I hear you have a reel purty mouth...

Mr. H one reason not to step off trail, back East, is poisonous snakes. Here in the Cascades, where I, live no problem.

Some of the trails around here are abandoned logging roads.

I'm sure pio will love this one:

I just laughed because I grew up in a union household, and I would never willingly join one.

6. You can beat people up and throw spare parts into a transmission with impunity.

7. You can run all business and industry out of town and live in a hell hole.

8. You can take a lot of breaks.

I am shocked they fail to mention the salaries of the people that run the union to show how wisely spent the dues are

Grew up in a household that believed in unions (sadly none of the adults actually worked), family in the union, whole town was a union town, and actually worked at a Chrysler plant.

Fuck unions and those that believe in them. They want so much input into how a company is run they refuse to take any responsibility if things go pear-shaped and blame it all on management, when in point of fact, they control one of the major line items of any budget.

Unions had a place, and some still do. Nowadays, some shouldn't exist. The long shore man's, what a pack of thieves. The whole rail road industry is a zoo, both sides. Oil industry the unions seem fine. A few other places they are reasonable. Greed is wreaking so many of them. Dad said they demanded good work, decades ago, or they wouldn't have you. Nowadays, so many of them, they don't care. Lack of beneficial pride. The world has changed so much some of them are becoming like the buggy whip industry.

Local Union for Philip Morris decided they wanted a raise and one time bonus as the Company was going so well. They didn't realize that big tobacco these days needs a large profit to sustain the dividends required for more stable stockholders. This as the pension funds decreed they will not invest in that type of company anymore.

Turns out it was the straw that broke the camels back, raise was given in January last year under threat of strikes, plant was closed in August. 2500 people at the plant and related companies are out of a job.

To boot, a friend of mine is the head of hr at a firm close by. Said he had some of pm come over to inquire about a job. They where unemployable with salary demands some 70% higher than the usual for the type of job.

I do support unions as some companies do need some pushback, but they so easily lose track of the bigger picture, both for their own, the companies and societies sake..

Along that line, when I was a youngster, my brother was working at a parts casting plant that sold to the local Big Three plants. The union at this foundry, which was privately owned by a local family, went on strike with outrageous demands. The owners opened the books entirely to the union showing the plant would go bankrupt if they met the demands. The union claimed the books were cooked and refused to budge. The plant closed up with the workers still picketing.

Fucking idiots and this little demonstration of stupid has stuck with me my entire life.
