Military base pay, in general, is exceeding low. A private makes less than minimum wage if you figure a 50 hour work week. 2nd LTs make <$35k in base pay. That being said, they get a lot of benefits, such as great health insurance at a cheap price, and housing/food allowances (or free on base housing).
There was an article in the NYT awhile back (and some variation shows up regularly) about how conservatives should love caps on executive pay because they love the military and there isn't much pay disparity between a private and a general. They always leave out those massive perks that high ranking officers get though (drivers, personal security, massive housing allowances, etc).
