Apparently 75k/yr is "rich" now. One of the comments in the Facebook post: "Considering the median family income in the us is about 60k, 75k is considered rich"

Just because you're broke as a joke doesn't mean 75k is rich.

Sweet, I'm rich! I can be a cool kid like Piob and Harvey now.

Median U.S. household income is more like 50k, and global median income is about 1k, so yeah if as an individual you pull in 75k and you are not rich, then you must be doing something pretty fucked up with your money.

The thing is when you are poor and living on ~25 to 30k a year, 75k sounds like alot.

But you will probably move into better place and buy a car or better car and BAM ! you are back to living like before, but not really, but still feel like you don't have enough.

75k is obviously objectively better than 20k, but it's still a long way away from any reasonable definition of rich

Agreed. More like comfortable in most cases.

30k will put you in the top 1% in the world, so 2.5 times as much as someone in the top 1% isn't rich? Bullshit.

Notice both those cities have notorious rent control laws. Any coincidence?

You understand the concept of cost of living, right? Also that terms such as rich and poor are completely subjective. In most of the developed world, 75k doesn't come close to anyone's definition of rich.

Yes I do. Do you realise that around a 3rd of the children in developing nations are malnourished (50% of children in the world live in poverty), about a billion people are illiterate, and the same number don't have access to clean drinking water (2 billion have no water within a kilometre of there home), and 3 billion lack access to adequate sanitation?

Also that terms such as rich and poor are completely subjective.
The conversation started with Gibonius saying that 75k a year is objectively not rich.

Except for the vast majority of people in the developed world who earn well under that figure. Just looked up the figure for median U.S. earnings in 2012 http://www.census.gov/prod/2013pubs/p60-245.pdf it is 38k, (excluding those with no income) An income which is about twice the median and which puts you in the top 15% (excluding the poorest of the poor, higher if they are included) is rich by any reasonable definition.

Piob often states that he is not rich (I have no idea of his income), but he lives in a nice big house, drives a luxury car, and often eats at nice restaurants, one would assume that he has a pretty nice wardrobe, that is rich.
