And how did it get this far if it had no standing?
Well it's not really a given. That's something the court will have to sort out.

What does it say about me that I had no idea there was any Supreme Court gay marriage thingie until today?

Basically, if the Court did this, the law would be overturned in California, but it would have no precedential value on the federal level.

So if the case was to be denied on a lack of standing, Prop 8 would be overturned, relegalizing gay marriage in Cali?

EDIT: from SCOTUS blog, yes, lack of standing is good for gay marriage.

To my understanding, good for gay marriage in California (FABULOUS!!!) but bad nation wide in that it tacitly supports a strong states' rights by not pulling a federal ruling over gay marriage per se.

Ie: it might prevent the whole:

Step 1) get the feds to say that gay marriages are legal in XYZ states that want them
Step 2) move a gay couple to Arkansas or whatever
Step 3) use the federal rule, take it to court and then use court magic to get gay marriage legal everywhere

thing that I've probably horribly over simplified and gotten parts of it wrong?

What's with the equal signs? What do they mean, and why those color? What happened to yellow and blue?

Equality. George Takei when he posted the red and pink one said that it was to reflect "love" - red being the colour of hearts and whatnot.

Well I'm hoping the gay marriage people win. Gay marriage means gay divorce, and I could use the money.

They're expressing "solidarity" over a couple of cases currently being heard by the Supreme Court. Basically, they want to be sure that everyone on Facebook knows how politically aware and forward thinking they are, and that they just support the right of people to love whoever they want. Or, put another way, they're people whose political engagement can be reduced to a trite, meaningless gesture that requires pretty much zero effort.

Here's my FB avatar in response:

A little inside joke for the lawyers out there.
