I also appreciated the gratuitous dig at "socialism" as if that has something to do with secularism.

Keep going. I think I know where you're going, but I'd like to see. It's an interesting topic.

There are different aspects. The most compelling to me is that socialism is based on rationalism. The concept that a group of people can rationalize the spontaneous order that built up society and modify it by designing additional rules, regulations and institutions. You can not rationalize god or religious belief. So you would end up with two concepts competing with each other, the idea that humans are able to understand and design all parts of society and on the contrary the belief in something we can ever understand with our minds. Due to the nature of the state in socialism it is in the stronger position and will get rid of religion. You can see empirical evidence in every communist country, either the church becomes part of the state or it gets gradually wiped out.

There are other easier ways to explain it aswell. Like religious values conflict with state values, the state does not like institution that it does not control....

"People are so quick to jump all over the shooting and say we need to take guns away from everybody, but on the other hand it's ok that 3,500 babies are aborted everyday. Hmm....What's wrong with this?"

And people who answer to God are not as easy to control. We are probably saying the same thing; in the communist countries, it wasn't just an attack on organized religion and institutions, it was a push to make the state the people's god.

IMO, people that answer to any deity are very easy to control.

The most absurd thing about any of this is the idea that somehow christians don't feel comfortable expressing their religious beliefs. You could have fooled me.

She's certainly never been shy before, to the point of talking about how her severely disabled son's travails have tested her faith. I don't know what prompted this rant, probably some friend asking her to tone it down.
