I know you're just trolling but... there are many RP supporters who actually believe what you typed. And I'm not sure where it is coming from. W managed to win twice without any particular Ron Paul/libertarian backing so clearly, it can be done.

But on top of that, you're just too small a percentage to matter, sorry.

In 1988 Ron Paul had .5% of the vote in the general.
In 2008 Ron Paul had .8% percent of the delegates and 1.6% of the vote in the primary.

After four years of organizing and campaigning and outreach he is at a whopping 11.4% of the vote (with an even smaller share of the vote when its all said and done, guaranteed), 75% less than Mitt, and fewer victories than Newt. But, yeah, hey, sure, you're going to decide the general when you can't even win a single state in the primary and the only time you come close is when 50% of the candidates decide to not even contest the race. Whatever you have to tell yourself is fine.

I have a lot of libertarian/Paulite friends and, tbh, they are as bad as born again christians sometimes. It's just not even fathomable that their economic hypotheses aren't 100% accurate. Try to point out the failure of some libertarian backed solution and they will tell you its because the solution wasn't "pure" free market enough. And if, by some chance, you are able to overcome this and paint them into a corner, the conversation is now about ideals and "the state is violence" and you are a Statist and therefore exactly the same as Bush and Stalin.

Actually, that last part makes them a little bit like true believer Marxists as well.

I'm actually in sympathy with them in a lot of ways, but the lack of openness to compromise means that they will always be a fringe.

You would think that if Paul supporters really understood his point of view, their default vote would go right, but it doesn't. They will vote Paul or Democrat.

This is the problem with just about every libertarian I've met. In fact, you could have entitled this "why MrG refuses to call himself a libertarian."

Curiously, my experience has been the complete opposite of this.

Yeah not all of his supporters are from the left. It seems split pretty evenly, actually. A friend of mine who is the loudest Paul supporter I know was a Bush Republican before being born again as someone who knows everything.

Here's one from that liberal fart Matt Yglesias, posted by a friend who works in the ad agency biz:

That's hooey - the people, by and large, that he is talking about are more "disenfranchised misanthropes" than pure libertarians.

They're the part of the GOP that has been overrun/silenced by the Xtian right, and is now trying to seize the opportunity to "take the party back".

That's also why this new populist wave of libertarianism is a magnet for all the birther/truther/xer conspiracy nuts.

A TRUE libertarian will tell you that the reason to have free markets is to facilitate individual liberty FIRST. The fact that free markets lead to optimal allocation of resources to production (which is NOT the same as equal or optimal distribution of wealth) is incidental.

I wonder how many of those folks have actually read any Rothbard or Friedman.
