Masquerade Party: Mask Advice

Thread Starter
Hello gents,

I have been invited to a masquerade party and am looking for some mask advice. Since I won't be using this mask again (read: I'll probably lose it), I'm in the search for a nice cheap idea. Unfortunately, I have no idea what makes for an acceptable or even masculine mask, so I figured I'd reach out to the minds of SF.

I did a search but all the threads quickly turned to making fun of the OP. I hope to not meet the same fate...

I will be wearing this Glenn plaid suit:

However, unlike in the picture, I plan on wearing a white open-collared shirt.

So, any advice on a suitable mask? (Please withhold Eyes Wide Shut references...)

You can get several great masks on Etsy at a reasonable price. Personally, I'm a fan of Robin Red.

I have been going to one every Christmas the past couple of years, and usually, I'm in a black tie (or black tie-ish) outfit with a colorful mask. I'll find the picture of what I'd worn this past year and post it.

I must say that I am not a fan of the outfit that you've picked. Most people at masquerade balls tend to wear either flashy suits or dark suits/black tie outfits. Yours is neither, and gives a "country" vibe. You look like you're ready for business in the countryside.

Very interesting. These all look pretty cool. A bit more expensive than I was thinking but a couple are quite tempting.

Interesting response. I agree that black tie would have been better. When I was initially invited I was told that it was to be a black tie affair. So naturally I was planning on wearing my tux. However, when I received the invitation it read "business casual" and went on to basically say no jeans, guys must have a collar, etc, etc. Pretty defeating as I had agreed to go under the impression it was to be black tie.

Due to the "new" dress code I thought this would be a solid choice. It's the loudest suit that I own and TBH I never wear this for business as I see it as too in-you-face both in pattern and in the lapel width. Given that this is likely going to be a casual affair I thought it was a nice party suit and would fit in well.

Here's a closer look at the pattern of the jacket. As you can see it's quite pronounced IRL:

Lulz. The party is in DC. I can't decide if that makes your mask more or less appropriate...

I bet the host had to dress down the event so that the slobs would show up. Too bad... I'd love to go to a black tie masquerade ball.

I can't access most commercial sites at work right now, but try googling Venetian masks.

It is equally appropriate for a Georgia boy in all situations, all locations the world over. (I know you weren't born here - but you're here now!)

However, in DC it seems to be beyond appropriate, perhaps even compulsory.

I suggest closing this thread, as there couldn't possibly be anything else worthwhile to say on the matter. nod[1].gif

Seriously - you might try poking around New Orleans based web sites. Most of the Mardi Gras masks will be horrid - but there are some masked balls that are very elegant. Those masks have to come from somewhere.

I apologize for the poor quality of the picture, but I'm still waiting for the "official" photographs. Here's one from a masquerade ball this past Christmas.

Loro Piana midnight blue black tie attire, red mask with matching red studs and cuff links. I wore a plain waistcoat rather than a cummerbund because it was rather cold. smile.gif
