I have never seen this look being worn; can it be a good casual look? Dark grey-ish flannel shirt, brown/tan corduroy sport coat, and jeans?

would need pics to decide. Depends on a whole host of relative things, type of cord, texture of shirt, etc.

I think it would work just fine, given the right environment.  If you live in a major coastal urban area I would have doubts.  But in Denver, Portland or Salt Lake City?  Hey, go for it.
