I'm going to a semi-formal dance at my university next month. My tie will match my date's dress, the colour of which is undetermined, but in the meantime, what colour shirt should I get? I have very dark brown eyes and hair, and a pale complexion.

I was going to go with white, but for some godforsaken reason, no one wears jackets at these dances, only shirts and ties. Does that influence your advice any?

they don't wear a sportcoat because they don't own one (I did not own a sportcoat or even a suit when I was in college). If you have one, wear it.

With the likeliness of vomiting or spilling alcohol on your clothes, it makes sense not to wear suits or jackets.

If it's semi formal than you don't need to wear jackets. A white shirt is just a safe bet if you're unsure.

pebble and unbel have it right. White shirt, don't select anything with the aim of matching anything your date is wearing.

get a white shirt with a white pinstripe in it, make sure it is slim fit so it doesnt look like a tent, and then the tie does not matter
