State of the Union - Ties

Ok - who issued the memo?

Medium to bright blue ties with white 'neat' patterns or narrow stripes are apparently bi partisan.

Where is the prez's square! butbut.gif

I think there's a fad for them in Washington these days. And Romney also wears the ones with white neats a lot.

I did notice that Obama's tie is better than Biden's or Boehner's, or Romney's, Gingrich's, Santorum's, Paul's, or Brian Williams's from last night. Better than Romney's or Boehner's; miles better than those of the rest.

Biden's makes me think there's a rule: Narrow stripes of equal width in strong contrast bright colors don't look good.

Biden's breast pocket contrasted with Obama's and Boehner's does show why men should wear at least a white handkerchief: it breaks up the dull uniformity of the hankless chest and gives that breast pocket something to do.

Pat Leahy dared to wear mid-gray pinstripes! A politico in a non-dark non-solid! Hurrah! A blow for style!

'Course, he's got one of the safest seats in Congress... frown.gif

I spied a BROWN suit with a tweedy tie - couldn't tell who was wearing it.

I'm sure whoever he is, he won't be back! crackup[1].gif

Yeah, what a sad fall off it is from the days of Reagan, Tom Foley, and Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Those guys knew how to dress.

Now Mitch Daniels is wearing a sky blue shirt with his navy suit to give the Republican response. Just looks bad: way too much blue.

Reid's suit looked like a brown pinstripe to me, but it could've been the lighting or saturation or some combination of the two.

Definitely agree that Daniels' shirt was too much blue.

Brian Williams fumbled it tonight with that contrast collar shirt and loud red-gold, wide-striped tie.

Good eye, ur. From his Facebook page, looks like Reid was wearing a mid-gray pinstripe with a brownish tint just after the Address. I guess some of the Senate's old warhorses do feel comfortable in pinstripes.

Now why can't we convince Biden--who obviously enjoys clothes--to try out a DB flannel chalk stripe?

I think this:

looks much better than this, at the Monday debate:

Is the former what you had in mind?

Judging from the top hits on Google Images, I agree that he has a thing for overly loud striped ties. If you want bold stripes in bright colors, the fabric shouldn't be smooth and shiny.

Pat Leahy doing a much better job than Williams (and Eric Holder) here:

Might be the same suit he wore last night. Note how much more life his tie has than Holder's, which looks like the dead fish that Flusser so eloquently castigated.

Never thought I would say this, but IMO Santorum's tie is the best of the four (five, counting Wolf Blitzer's awful lavenderish royal blue satin) tonight. Would be even better if it were the shade of Paul's maroon ground with ugly stripes. Charcoal and dark red is the best against those CNN blue backgrounds. Rick Perry exploited that, though his ties were too bright.

Gingrich's navy repp with red stripes isn't bad.

Why does Romney think that his uniform of navy suit and pacfiic blue or royal blue tie with white neats is a good look to wear in every debate? Especially against CNN's blue backgrounds. Just reinforces the robot stereotype.
